As slashdot writes, is has now been 20 years since the first episode of Commander Keen.
I really quite enjoyed it back in the day, and still play it from time to time, and you should too!
It can be bought on steam right now. Of course you could also wait for gog.com to make a deal with 3D Realms/id Software.

Oh, nice. Happy 20th, Keen! Secret of the Oracle is awesome! :D
damn, ID really needs to get on gog.com....

also: Happy birthday keen :)
I loved the Commander Keen series growing up so I must wish Billy Blaze a happy birthday! I share a birthday with Commander Keen, that's pretty awesome in my book. :P
Wonder how they'd ruin that franchise today, 3rd person cover based shooter with loads of QTE's?

No, don't be silly. They wouldn't have to ruin the franchise. They already ruined it a decade ago when they dug up Keen's corpse (which had, in turn, been dead for the last decade before that, in addition to being killed in a much less metaphorical way in Doom II) and put it on Gameboy Color!

Whoring out their I.P. hasn't always turned out bad. Doom 64 is a good example of this. I still replay it in addition to the PC ones from time to time.

Well, not only was Doom still popular when that came out, but, you know, Doom 64 was actually good. Very good.

I agree. An awesome game that's made even better today with the control (mouselook) and graphical enhancements (AA + AF + filtering/scaling) made possible through emulation. I was very happy Doom 64 turned out to be a unique part of the Doom universe and not just a straight translation of Doom to N64 - not only that but Midway did a respectable job on it.
There is a really good fangame trilogy, "The Universe is Toast" (named after the cancelled official trilogy). The first episode (#7) is a hack of Episode 4, so since it uses code of a shareware episode and simply replaces the original sprites with fan sprites, it's legal. Likewise, fan episode 8 is a hack of Aliens Ate My Babysitter, again with new sprites, music and level design. Episode 9 will be the first full Episode 5 hack, so I'm not sure how it's going to play out legally.

That's the best thing about Doom 64. It was the real Doom 3. With so many other first-person shooters at the time getting ports, and quite often greatly inferior ones, Doom 64 was quite a surprise. Being obsessed with Doom at the time, I got the game anyways, thinking it was a port with new graphics and and a few new levels. I was pleasantly surprised when I popped in the game and started playing, to say the least!
