Link to the Past is one of the finest games ever made. Played it hundreds of times in the past 20+ years.
Best Zelda game is the third one (Link to the past I think??? Anyway, it was the Super Nintendo version) The first one is a close second. The second one was the worst of the series.

By the way, if you're into nostalgia, you can play the original on your computer. I've played it, and it's basically the exact same as the Nintendo version. Download here.

Never been much of a consoler, I've played (some of the first), A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, Link's Awakening and Oracle games.
While I'm a fan of the whole series, out of those, I'd have to say Link to the Past, followed by Ocarina of Time.
1. A Link to the Past
2. Link's Awakening
3. Ocarina of Time
4. A Link Between Worlds
5. The Wind Waker
6. The Legend of Zelda
7. Twilight Princess
8. Majora's Mask
9. Skyward Sword
10. Adventures of Link

Those are the ones I've played. Never got around to some of portable games, but did manage Link's Awakening. Great game.

Emob78: Link to the Past in a photo finish against Ocarina of Time.
This for me too. Between the graphics, the music and the story, ALttP had an intangible magic that has never really been reproduced. Such a beautiful, charming game. Ocarina was a goliath of a game that really pulled me into it.

Two wonderful games.

darthspudius: But Devil May Cry defines the word overrated. That series is bucking awful!
This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.
Majora>Wind Waker>Minish>Awakening DX>Oracle>OOT.

As a sidenote: Skyward Sword is the bottom the well for me. So many stupid design decisions.

I like the original the most. According to Miyamoto, the original Legend of Zelda was designed as being the opposite of Mario: top down, non-linear, etc. Since Ocarina of Time, the games in the series have become way too linear, with maybe one or two temples you can play out of order without exploiting bugs, focus way too much on their mediocre story (aside from the fan Majora's Mask theory), and a hub world that connects the dungeons which are generally very empty and dull.

I hadn't played the original Zelda until I was in my 20s (I still am), so it's not really one I grew up with, but it is the one game in the series that I want to replay over and over again with different routes and/or challenges (swordless anyone?). I really hope the newer Zelda is as non-linear as the original game, as they did hint at it being less linear.

How so? The controls are pants, story is pants, the save system if that's what you call it... is pants. Its a very badly built game that people cling to like fly to shit. I never got it then and I don't get it now. It feels like a bunch of ideas slapped together for the sake of making money... just because.

You mean a bunch of super awesome ideas stuck together to make the most kickass action game ever? I'm confused, maybe we should go over that again.

If you liked the gameplay of the original Zelda (i.e., non-linear exploration), you should really try Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. It's a pretty great game that allows you to complete (most) of the dungeons in whatever order you so choose. It also has some really great mechanics that take full advantage of the 3DS hardware, especially since the gameplay revolves around a transformation gimmick where your character becomes 2D.

None. I've never bothered to play a Zelda game.
It's a tight finish between Link to the Past and Link's Awakening; I think the first made good use of the SNES's power to come out better from a purely gameplay point of view, but the story of Link's Awakening was great in a way that LttP couldn't aspire to. I still find it more compelling than Ocarina of Time, which I suppose is the first (sort of) "story-heavy" Zelda game.
