Sanjuro: Preposterous! What next, "You can just play the games from your backlog instead of grabbing new ones to add to it"?
avatar
ped7g: Wait, you mean one can play the games bought on GOG? I thought it was just for collecting, and I was sort of sad I'm still few pieces just below 1000...

But if they can be played ... whoa, this is insane, not even sure where to start.
no you're right. Games on GOG are for collecting. The ones on Steam are for playing. Anyone caught actually playing GOG games will be turned over to Wolfenstein's Nazi for mystical experimentation.
Yes, it is less predatory system of gambling, still I'm disappointed from GOG now. Not I wouldn't expect it after Activision and Bethesda publishing = Zenimax have put their games and interests here...

I think they did promos like that long before Zenimax came on board, there's really no connection. And if all GOG users would dislike them, these promos probably wouldn't have been repeated by GOG either. But apparantly they are supported and/or liked by enough customers.

I never saw any of that, but it is possible.

I'm just disappointed they do it now, when a lot of big but not really friendly companies are enjoying the ride which is very unfriendly to some players I almost got impression they do it because they don't want them to enjoy any game - like pushing it through, enjoying how they feel miserable. And some players came here hoping they will never do it.

And now after all of that GOG joins that? For me it feels like they just discredited themself and betrayed trust of some people here. Well if the money are worthy of it...

Btw. some players support anything that is not nice for other players, even with a lot of money - hardcore players turing every MMO into hell, not even being hardcore themself or requiring anti lore content or anything else - just for fun. So now it is mystery boxes...

Random game promos were here before you even joined.

... unless you're an economy-centered player in a 4X galactic strategy game.
Friendly reminder that you can always refund anything that you don't want. I would advise people to simply avoid buying stars if they can't accept getting games that may not interest them, but if you get something particularly objectionable there's always a way to get your money back.

I'm disappointed to see so many people outraged by this, with some even wanting it to be illegal. Technically it may be gambling, but so what? So are those little vending machines at the supermarket where you put in a quarter and get a random toy. It's harmless fun, and you know what you're getting into before you spend your money. GOG even makes it as risk-free as possible by guaranteeing games that you don't already own (unless you own them all already) and adhering to their normal refund policy. I'm not saying people are wrong to dislike it, but some people here are taking it way too seriously.
You don't have to buy the stars to get the game you want. You can just buy the game you want from the store. I don't see the problem here. If your only reason to buy stars is that you might get the game cheaper that way then that's entirely on you for being a greedy customer.

B.D.: It's gambling, and I wish (upon a star) that this sort of offer becomes illegal someday.
Watch it if you have children with access to your gog account.
Why should it become illegal as long as you will be able to refund every single star you don't like? If children would buy a game it's the same as if they are buying stars. I would agree if there were no refund possibility but it's there.
Right, I had not considered the possibility for refunds. Guess I was being too annoyed by lootboxes everywhere.

I understand. This post was sort of addressed to those complaining they were only getting "meh" games. Don't gamble.
Yeah, to hell with "stars". But be sure to buy card kegs to get your "free" games!
This star thing is definitely gambling however; to be fair you do get a game that is of similar to more value which makes it fair. I managed to obtain Strategic Command: European Theatre which is a title that I would have never purchased even on sale but I actually find it to be a rather good game after playing it and got to experience a title that I would have otherwise never played.

Yes though you can definitely end up with some crappy game out of the star sale that isn't worth playing but that is the risk you choose to take if you decide to buy which of course isn't necessary
