TheDudeLebowski: It's The Year of Stealth for me. I've always enjoyed stealth games, but this year I'm playing mainly those games/catching up on backlog. I seem to be enjoying them even more now. The stealth games I played in 2020 up to now are Alien: Isolation, Styx 1 & 2, Hitman 2 (2018), Thief Gold, and currently playing Deus Ex: Human Revolution in stealth mode.

Been watching reviews on Dishonored online and I'm conflicted, so I'm fishing for opinions from people who prefer stealth games over other genres.

I treat stealth games as puzzle games. So much so, that I mostly forget I have gadgets at my disposal to help passing difficult parts in a game. I played Hitman 2 SA/SO blind on my first playthrough this year just because I enjoy the challenge.

Would I enjoy Dishonored as a pure stealth game, or is it an action game leaning towards stealth?
I played the first two on stealth, in both cases it left me feeling that I'd just spent a long time waiting for people to move into positions, and for people to be on their own. It's like being given the keys to the candy shop (USA term), but being told you can only eat those 2 types of sweets.

To my mind the games were giving a nod to stealth, but making the game for chaos.

Haven't played the third.

toxicTom: I love how the game constantly tempts you to leave the non-violent path. So often you lurk there in the dark, or on a rooftop and think "it would be easy to kill this guard now...".

If you want Corvo is an absolute killing machine - ninja-like. Non-lethal takedowns are a bit more challenging.
You see that’s a mentality issue. I look down from my position and see a future problem. Be that from raising an alarm, or joining the affray. Leave no unfinished business.
Well as they say "Shall we gather for cigars and whiskey" or is it "Whiskey and cigars" I cant remember..
I'm glad this kind of questions are posted every now and then. I'm also interested in this series and the answers have been really informative.

Please elaborate, as I'm not seeing how this is detrimental given that it shows Arkane was taking tester feedback into consideration. Is the aim supposed to be that the game was designed "too free and open"?

Having players obeying guards in a stealth game is kind of weird to be honest. And that's if you disregard that the article strongly implies the game was dumbed down after receiving the testplayers' input.

Are you saying that:
- more sandbox = good
- linear gameplay = dumb = bad
If that's how you feel for yourself, fine. But there's no need to generalize it.

Maybe. Within context of that specific section of the game it may have gone through different changes in layout during the testing phase as well. The article doesn't really do a great job of providing relevant detail.

I didn't get that impression based on what little is there. I did get the impression that when they encountered this, they realized that freedom without some direction is confusing to some people (true in the game and out).

They're very much designed to be played "your way." I would guess most people mixed it up, doing some stealth but then action when caught or in the mood, but you can play it as a pure FPS style game if you want. It has a lot of nods to Thief in various ways, but I'd say it's more like Deus Ex when it comes to "genre," whatever that term even means at this point.

Anyway... Dishonored trilogy are some of my absolute faves the last 10 years, hope you enjoy them OP.
Dishonored is a fantastic game.
I remember playing it when it was available as free weekend game.
I finished it during that period! :P
It was not a proper finish though. It's definitely one of the game worth visiting twice.
If this thread keeps going the way it is, I think I'll end up buying it now, though I'd rather wait till I'm more "economically flexible".

I guess I have 24 or so hours to decide.
Took the plunge! I'll know in a few days.
