Half an eternity ago I played the first Worms game when it was new and even though I thought it was fun it wasn't really for me since the Worms games are primarily supposed to be played with several people in hot seat mode. Playing against bots isn't as much fun.

Nowadays we have almost a dozen Worms games and since they are now in a very deep discount (see newsletter code) I thought about getting one or maybe two anyway.

But the question is: Which one?

What is the difference between all the games? What are their strong/weak points? Which would you recommend getting (or not getting) and why?

Since I haven't kept up with the history of the series I have no idea which ones are good and which ones aren't. So I'm asking for your opinion.

Did you get a discount code from the email?
If not, I've an unused one.
Mmmm i'd probably stick with the SNES one myself. As they all seem to more-or-less be the same.
I would suggest either Worms Armageddon or Worms W.M.D. They have more variety, options, gameplay than others compared to others who feel like downgrades or demo versions of these two, especially World Party which is censored and in general just a bad port.
https://www.gog.com/en/game/worms_wmd -85% keeps up the spirit modern way tested worth it, working multiplayer
https://www.gog.com/en/game/worms_armageddon -70% with this part an Aqua Sheep
https://worms2d.info/Super_Sheep_(Aqua_Sheep) is available, you can fly it and dive into the water and fly into air again,
must have : ) it's mostly perfected worms2

This spin-off is funny and playable https://www.gog.com/en/game/worms_crazy_golf

Haven't played this yet https://www.gog.com/en/game/worms_revolution to do

First two and if you can play old installer with world party, as for 3d I don't know : )

Armageddon 100%

Next would be 3D, but that's not available anywhere.

Worms 4 is also worth getting, so Ultimate Mayhem.

World Party is good, but the original. Not the censored and buggy remaster.

As for all the modern "2D" ones, they are all just inferior Armageddon.

I always found the 3D ones just uniformly terrible.

World Party was always my favorite one, seemed like the most complete. Not that there's much fundamental difference between the classic 2D games (after the first, that is) I'll be honest, I never even noticed any censorship in the WWP remaster. But then, I didn't encounter any bugs either. What was it that they censored?
Ultimate Mayhem absolutely, especially for single player and if you are not biased toward 2D ones.

Armageddon for classic experience. World Party originally had more content, but Armageddon got most of it eventually in the updates along other improvements.

WMD seems to be generally considered best from the latest generation, but I didn't like it. Too cartoonish looking and mechanics like vehicles feel off (but can be disabled for more or less classic experience so that's it).

Removed pre-made CPU teams (like the team named after British royalty), removed "offensive" voice banks (like Jock, Whoopsie etc.), removed several team flag options.

Some weapon names were also adjusted (Indian Nuclear Test - Nuclear Test, French Sheep Strike - Sheep Strike, Suicide Bomber - Worms Blast etc.).

Also, the remaster has broken the highlight replay feature, which just doesn't work.

Huh. It's been so long since I played the original, I didn't even notice any of that. Absolutely idiotic, I have to admit. Nevertheless, the game is still great fun.

For me, there's only one rule, when it comes to the "Worms" games: it has to be 2D!
Everything else is (more or less) irrelevant.

You can't really do anything wrong, if you follow that simple rule.
Worms 2 multiplayer had TCP/IP multiplayer but you had to know the server IP so relied on Gamespy etc.

Worms Armageddon had a central "server" which was on the backend an IRC server which matched players to games = IRC channels. Later when the official server had problems a community server was launched called Cleanair which was an alternative IRC server with the same setup without the problems. I don't remember the details, I just remember being impressed that the community could step in when Microprose/Team17 couldn't.

Love WA. Hate what Team17 has become since.

Thanks to everyone for your opinions.

I went with Armageddon to see why everyone likes that game so much.
