It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).
We suggest you upgrade newer and better browser like: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera

I just read that the ability to run Android apps will only be available on the ARM version of Windows. There goes my interest in it and my rekindled interest in Windows tablets.
It also seems, Windows 10 will be the "last" Windows version released. The big M says that they will just upgrade it like OSX instead of coming out with newer versions. I think they should have done that way back with Windows 7 IMO.

I feel even though 7 is old and no longer on mainstream support, it is now on extended support, that they should still come out with a service pack 2. There are so many updates to install if you clean install Windows 7 SP1 on a new machine or on a older PC that you just had to clean install. I just had to clean install Windows 7 after my hard drive went out, and it took hours after installing Windows to update it with all those updates. I mean a service pack doesn't need to add anything new to 7, just streamline the update process with all the updates released since SP1, would make a faster install or less consumer irritation. Just my thoughts.

According to this article, it will be the last version of windows - until the next version.. :)
Win9...I mean 10 release date.
Nice that Windows 10 will be free and everything.

But invading my Windows 7 system tray with some "upgrade app" that was stealth installed as an essential update, and with no quit option is pretty invasive and fucking annoying.
Luckily, i have updates set to check for, but not DL or install.
I don`t trust Microshaft ;)

Long live Amiga \o/
And I have a system tray icon telling me to upgrade.

Frankly, it's annoying.

Yes, it most certainly is.

You can remove it from what I`ve read. Something about check your last installed updates & uninstall that part.
Probably wise to stop updates too, or it`ll just reinstall it again. tbh nothing major will get updated for 7 I`d of thought, so safe.

mnevill: So, I'm considering upgrading from Windows 7 to 10 since it is free.... But.... am wondering what that might do for my GoG library.

Thoughts anyone?
2 Things to take into account:

1) Windows 10 is beta at this point

2) Do they give you a Windows 10 installer with your upgrade?

If so, you'll have to buy Windows 10 the moment you need to reformat after the initial year that it's free.

and that joke in that link is old btw
all updates and version of mac os X are free now i can download mavericks right now if i like
It's still relevant for Linux vs Windows.

Windows will often do things like:

1) Force a reboot and shutdown what you are doing

2) Do updates while you are shuting down while telling you not to close the computer (sucks for anyone with a laptop who needs to go)

3) Do updates while the computer is booting (probably the least bad of the 3 behaviors)

Compared to that, Linux will never update until you give it the ok, will never reboot after an update until you reboot and will never slowdown your shutdown to update.

Windows`update system is very paternalistic while Linux's update system recognises that it is ultimately your machine.

If they give you a serial, it is quite possible that the iso will be freely available should you need to reinstall. And I think I recall them saying that you will be able to download an iso instead of an update for Windows 10.
Still two months to go though.

You can set windoze to not install until you say so. Or as I have it set, to only check & never DL or install until I set it going.

It should be the default, but nice to know it is there.

Nothing I hate more than Windows rebooting to upgrade while I'm playing a game.

But what update was it? I check all my updates before installing and there wasn't any that said "install this update to get Windows 10 offered".

One of my recent updates says this: "This update enables additional capabilities for Windows Update notifications when new updates are available to the user. It applies to a computer that is running Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1). Before you install this update, check out the Prerequisites section."

https://support.microsoft.com/nl-nl/kb/3035583/en-us

That's the culprit, maybe? If so, Microsoft is not frank in telling what the update does. And there's lots of updates saying it enhances the updater itself to allow future updates. Vague, very vague.

As I`ve not installed it, I can`t see, but on another forum, folk are saying:
"C:\Windows\System32\GWX\GWX.exe" is the file to activate it, so anything with that in I`d say.

If I find it again, will link it, but away for a few days tomorrow on.

Just found something else for basic win10 users.

Yet another reason for me to stay clear of it. You can`t choose if you want it to just check/check-DL but not install or do all three. Your only option is to DL & install by default.
TA-DAAAA!! (I should Minion meme that ;p)

"The update, identified by Microsoft as KB3035583" is the one to get shot of. Enjoy.
