Depending on how bad you want to play it, you could get the Linux port (currently $11 on tuxgames.com).

Nope, it isn't. Same games are available as downloads, but it seems the older ones are not. I think I'll ask them about it, though I suppose it is a publisher barrier.

Also, you probably wouldn't have to install Linux. I imagine such an old game is more than playable if you boot the live CD or USB. In fact, why not try it with the demo? I actually downloaded it myself, as I've never played HG2 :)

heh i have the CD and big box, May retry again later, I love the game because its like mechwarrior, Tad simpler and looks pretty good for its age, Also i played it on a old system i had in 2007 that was a amd 1.5ghz and 32mb onboard graphics. Ill actually download the demo now

I also hope gog.com will get Heavy Gear 2, that game was fun =)

Somewhere along the line support for DirectX 6 and earlier got borked up by the graphics card manufacturers and Microsoft. I think the first issues were caused by driver updates, later SP3 for Windows XP broke more stuff, and finally Windows Vista and 7 seem to handle DirectX in such a way that the older versions, even when installed correctly, are not recognised / don't work.

@topic: Getting Heavy Gear 2 on GOG would be epic.. in fact it's probably the game I want most to be on GOG.

Try compatibility mode. Set it to Windows 98/Me.

Take my money if they release it here (though it might not happen due to licensing because the IP is owned by Pod 9).

I wrote to Pod 9 about a GOG release and they said that they actually approached Activision a few years ago about it but Activision wasn't interested. We're gonna need a lot more votes on the wishlist or something, methinks.

this is not surprising from what little i know about the games industry and activision. but it makes me very sad.

i have just spent the last 4 hours trying to get heavy gear 2 installed in my machine. no luck. i found several iso, some would mount without poweriso, but all crashed immediately after UAC popup. error popup says setup.exe has stopped working. i click close program and another one comes up, same thing. close that one and back to file.

has any one else had that issue? how did you fix it?

i just switched to win10. i found a thread on the heavy gear assault forums about getting it to work on windows 10, but no one offered any help to the guy with the same issue as me.

i am running win10 pro x64. i have tried running setup.exe in every compatibility mode, with and without the additional options. i even tried using the application compatibility kit. but i could not get a fix to save because apparently i do not have write access to my own files or something.

anyways any help is appreciated. in the mean time i will just play mechwarrior 4 mercs.
