When i was a kid, my cousin used to play a certain game i liked a lot. He gave it to me when he left for college and couldn't play that many video games anymore. That game was a pirated copy burned on a disc.
I liked the game so much that recently, after so many years, i bought a legit copy of the game on Steam.
If my cousin never pirated the game, i would not have played it in all likelihood. But since i did play the pirate copy, i decided to buy a legit one many years later. So one way or another, the publisher got their money.
Unfortunately, i think the legit copy does have DRM, otherwise it would have been released on GOG. But anyway, this shows the whole argument of 'DRM helps us stop the loss of profit' is silly. Without my cousin giving me a pirated copy and sparking my interest in the game, they would never have made any money. My cousin probably would not have purchased it, and i would never have learned of the game.
