Because in the old days games where made by Devs for gamers enjoyment and the new games are made for gamers wallets.

Emob78: It's not necessarily that games were better in the past. More of an issue of GAMERS being better in the past. Ultimately the quality of both tend to go hand in hand, running parallel along a serious of bell curves.

Another way to put it -

WUT GOEZ UPP MUST CUM DOWN.
ah, i thought you were gonna say, "GIT GUD"

Crewdroog: And by hack and slash, I mean Diablo, Titan Quest, Grim Dawn, etc etc etc.

I just started playing Titan Quest and it is amazingly fun. But why is this game holding my attention when newer releases like Grim Dawn, PoE (which i DO like a lot), Diablo 3 and such just can't seem to. Is it the graphics? difficulty? lootz? *shrugs*

thoughts?

anothername: More interest in monetization than awesomeness.

i.e. D3 would most likely have been a cooler game if development/dev cost of real money action house would went into more map variants, character visuals etc. Lot of ppl would probably even say D3 would haven been cooler if RM AH dev cost would have spend on drugs and hookers :D
this could be said about most things in life :)

mobutu: I played them (almost) all and the best in this genre is Path of Exile
It is online-only free-to-play and you can only buy COSMETIC stuff which doesn't affect the gameplay in any way.
Fantastic value and highly recommended!
I agree, of all the new hns, this is one of my favorites, by far.

CrewDroogie, GIT GUD.
While I don't really play many hack-and-slash games, I will say this:
The old ones are probably called "classics" for a reason. They laid down the bases of what modern games comprise of. Being among the first to do so, it makes sense that they feel original and unique and cleverly designed because literally everything after it has to be a copy of some sort, despite whatever new features they add. It's the same kind of game with more bells n' whistles, and there's been so many old ones, they can't really avoid doing what's already been done.
Could also be they were just well-designed in general. As tinyE mentioned, there are no doubt loads of terrible ones none of us know about because they didn't stand the test of time. I'm sure many of today's games will face the same fate, and the good ones will be remembered just like the ones you mentioned.
Is it possible your enjoyment of TQ was due the Anniversary Edition changes? Maybe you should go back and try the originals. Good thing THQ Nordic made sure to include those as a bonu- OH WAIT.
