If you are looking for a classic RPG you've likely never heard of before, I could recommend Dragon Wars. This is a rather nice game, and it's often overlooked, mainly because most people have never heard of it.

While it's often referred to as a successor to the Bard's Tale series (and apparently would have been Bard's Tale 4 if it weren't for EA refusing to let them use the name), it is actually quite different, with less of a focus on dungeon crawling and more of a focus on exploration and (relatively easy) adventure game style puzzles, some of which involve using your characters' stats or skills. (Example: Melting ice with a fire spell.)
I was going to say maybe Celeste for something released this year, but it doesn't seem to be on gog...? WTF?

Into the Breach is kind of neat, I dunno how long it might last for me though.

Ancient-Red-Dragon: I strongly recommend these games:

Trails in the Sky

Trails in the Sky SC

Trails in the Sky the 3rd

Then after you beat those, follow them by these games (all of these games are set in the same world and build upon the previous games and their stories/characters):

Trails of Cold Steel

Trails of Cold Steel II

All of those have some of the best stories & characterization I've ever seen in any game.
I'll +1 this, but add that it would probably be best to purchase them in installments over time unless you're ready to drop $100 at once. The two Cold Steel games, even with the highest discount they've had here, are $50 on their own.
Hollow Knight is another good game to look into. Also, the soundtracks are worth the extra cost IMO.

Second Hollow Knight. Best Metroidvania I've ever played. As long as you enjoy challenging boss fights. Which I do.

Thirded. Well worth at least one play through -- easily 30 hours, more likely more.

Was about to suggest CrossCode, but its left sale yesterday :/

"Rpg" is quite large term tho. If somebody asks me about arpgs, I will constantly tell them about Grim Dawn - in my opinion, its the most definitive arpg out there (period).
Speaking turn based stuff - I should suggest Tales of Maj'eyal. Yes, its a roguelike but, with ability to disable permadeath and fixed storyline, it plays like some sort of turn-based diablo (also base game is (with some limitations) free on dev's site, if screenshots didnt make you hyped. I know that feeling, I've avoided this game for a long time too).
If we are talking "just indies with rpg flavour" in general, I would suggest you Bastion. Customization is kinda limited, but game itself is quite memorable (and gameplay feels so fun. Even if you dont have a gamepad)
