Here is a curious point.

I abandoned Steam many years ago and will not return.

My main point and one which I hope GOG take note of:

Whilst I will never return to Steam, I currently have more respect for Steam than I hold for GOG.

More respect for Steam!!!

Steam tell you up front that their client is required to install a game.

GOG tell you that their client is optional, but the downloads options are disguised.

UPFRONT or DISGUISED, which would you really trust when it came down to it?

If and when GOG go mandatory with Galaxy, I will simply leave by the same door I walked in on.
Here's what I think happened,

GOG sneaked in their "optional" client so people could check it out and see that it's not bad at all or intrusive in any way. You don't even have to start it up to play your GOG games unless there is a patch, DLC or a new game you bought and want to download it. I mean, some of you guys are ridiculous and got a little scared when you didn't look at the options menu in the installer. I like GOG Galaxy so far because it makes it easier to manage which games I've installed from them so far and organizes my bonus downloads.

I appreciate you (and many others) like Galaxy and desire it.

But even you call it sneaking.

GOGS method of operation, not yours and I understand the difference and respect your honesty.

+1

I use Galaxy because it makes both downloading and installations hassle free while also keeping track of my hours played.

and I say sneaked loosely because the GOG installers typically save any options you set on a previous installer for a different game so not everyone is going to triple check. I installed Galaxy day one so I didn't understand the issue until I formatted and wanted to have a game to play while my ninite programs installed.

The hassle free install is the biggest draw to Galaxy for me.

I will never understand this. Downloading and installing software is the easiest thing to do. It's not complicated at all. Why on earth does anyone need an extra program to do this? Are you able to cook your own meals, or do you have to rely on a wife or the pizza delivery in order to survive?

Just so we are clear, I have no problem with Galaxy, nor any ones wish to use it.

I do have a problem with how anyone loosely defines or implements sneaking.

I'm a software engineer, so yes, I'm able to download, install, configure, etc. That said, I am glad you brought up cooking, because it's a perfect analogy. I don't cook. Simply hate going through the process of buying ingredients and preparing meals. I eat out always, without exception. The fridge in my apartment has been unplugged for years.

It's not that I can't do it. It's that I don't want to. Hitting a button and/or telling a waiter what I want is much easier and improves my quality of life. =)

For what it's worth, I have nothing at all against people who cook for themselves, and think it would be very wrong to prevent them from doing so.

Uh, I'd just keep using my Steam account. The games I bought here and care about are already backed up.

Trilarion: What I don't like most about Galaxy is that you need to authenticate.
avatar
JMich: You don't. You only need to authenticate if you need to use any of Galaxy's functions (like downloading something or playing multiplayer on a game that requires Galaxy). You don't need to authenticate to run any installed game, whether you have it in your account or not.
No idea if Galaxy tracks your game time for games you don't own or not.
Good to know. Thanks for the information. Last time I tried it, which is more than a year ago, it asked me all the time for my credentials.

In that case I think I stay happily without Galaxy. I mean without authentication I can start my games but hey, without Galaxy I can start them too. So I don't gain much. In my eyes, not using Galaxy, is the most convenient solution (for me).

skeletonbow: Probably then.

Probably buy CDP SA stock.
avatar
ryuken3k: Can you elaborate on the "buy CDP SA stock" part?
Sure, no prob. CDP SA is the parent company of GOG.com and CD Projekt RED and they are publicly traded on the Poland stock exchange. If GOG ever decides to make Galaxy mandatory, it would certainly only be something they would do if business was going so incredibly well that the negative risks were so small compared to the business opportunities that it would potentially be a good investment opportunity so long as all of the rest of CDP SA's financials checked out.

DebbieL: how are they supposed to offer a DRM-free release when there's no longer a platform that provides this?
Since when do "platforms" decide the implementation of DRM?
