lazydog: Give the OP a break.

Its just more of this:-

https://www.gog.com/forum/general/offline_installers_with_an_option_to_install_gog_galaxy/post1414

and that is a backdoor to update any offline installer in anyway gog sees fit.
avatar
Ueber: But for me all of the mass-updated games already had classic and galaxy installers?
So why should they Update the installers if they already were updated to the new setup?
Without patch notes one can only assume why they were updated.

Given that I see games in my library that are extremely unlikely to have received any update from the dev/publisher add to this fact the sheer number that are being updated, I can only make a guess that gog are updating something to do with the galaxy files that have already creeped into the offline installers.

Of course that is only my opinion.

if you want a real answer, I would be sending a support ticket to gog promptly.

The only reason I am not doing so is that all my offline installers were backed up before the introduction of the galaxy bloatware (all that I could anyway), and it is I not gog, that determine if they should be updated.

DoomSooth: Life is DRM. You can't play games without it. Ban life!
Death has DRM. You need to be alive to die.
avatar
M3troid: Well, that's the problem with licensed musics. Once expired, it's time to say goodbye, unfortunately.
avatar
toxicTom: That's not the case, actually. When you buy the music, on a CD or contained in the game, the license is yours, essentially forever. The only license that expires is that of the store to sell that music.

So basically stripping music from a game users bought is not legal, because the existing users didn't buy a license with an expiry date. The correct way would have been to leave the existing users' games intact, and start selling a new version that misses the expired tracks.

The only ways a user's licenses can "go away" are:
- if they store didn't have the license to sell them in the first place. What happened to the Witcher 3 soundtrack - GOG/CDPR were not allowed to offer that one song in the first place, so they had to remove it for everybody.
- if the license is tied to some form of subscription or service. But then I wouldn't speak about "buying" something, it's more like renting it.
I know, but what i mean is when the musics are gone, there is no way to bought the game with them. In the worst case, the entire game is removed from sale.
I would like to see a changelog for many updates though.
SORRY, it was my fault. It was this thread of mine that started it all -

https://www.gog.com/forum/general/i_wonder_how_hard_it_might_be

But the question that remains, is did they make it easier for us or harder?

Or, if it wasn't me, then I suggest that GOG discovered a DRM element in many of their games, and so are updating them to remove it. I could start a rumor that many GOG games were set to stop working at an unspecified date ... GOG thought they would have died by then, but have done way better than they thought they would, so needed to add an extension ... or maybe it's the reverse, and and THE END IS NIGH.

Or maybe it's just something to do with Windows 10, like has been suggested.

Or some Galaxy issue is the reason.

Anyway ... NOTHING TO SEE HERE ... SO MOVE ON.

P.S. One EASY SOLUTION ...... STOP USING GALAXY .... works for many of us.

Wouldn't we all .... well some of us anyway. ;)

P.S. Those who use Galaxy though to get automatic updates, have abrogated all control to Galaxy, so really should not be complaining ... or even wondering ... it's not seemly. :)

It's way too easy to circulate rumours on the internet. If people didn't blindly believe everything they read online, the political landscape and the world as a whole would be very different.

Then again, it would also be a lot more boring ;)

Indeed.

Sometimes boring is good ... as I am sure many Americans could attest to right now ... for instance. :(
I don't really get why the masses of Updates might be a sign of the offline-installers to br abloshed?
Is it just because the wierd updates lately?

Might be different for others, but most of the Updates I recieved were 0 MB, which seemed either maintenace/compability relates or were bugged.

What game would that be...

The problem is that people seem to more and more often try to explain new things happenings (in this case game updates) with reasons that fit their beliefs (in this case something being amiss with GOG), rather than trying harder/more to search for the actual reasons behind things.
(I mean people in general.....it's a trend that seems to have been growing over the last 5-10 years or so....i.e. people not seeming to look much for reasons for things outside their own set beliefs on why such things happen and etc)

artphotodude2019: Via Galaxy (like 15-20 updates a day over the last week - many for REALLY OLD GAMES, that would not be getting updates). I think they are trying to make every game dependent on Galaxy to run.
avatar
PixelBoy: Wait... what?!

You are using Galaxy, and complaining about games using Galaxy?
I use Galaxy as an easy to use manager to get the offline installers of the gigabyte sized games and to occasionally update the more modern games that get such every now and then. I would complain if the games would suddenly stop working just because I kicked Galaxy off the hdd or would need it running during play. Unless I play something for specific online features.

edit
Turning auto-updates off was the first thing I did though. Major annoyance. Especially since months might pass between two uses of Galaxy.

So it turned out that Gog was moving a bunch of the titles to new servers and it fooled the autoupdater into reupdating.
Thank goodness this wasn't on a PS5 or XBXSX - would have smashed my bandwidth cap.

artphotodude2019: Why would I do that?

GamesRater: Wait, you dislike DRM, yet are using galaxy(which is sort of similar to DRM, and which many staunch anti-drm users dislike)? Why?
avatar
artphotodude2019: Just had 25 more in the last 10 minutes, and most are not Dos games. The server is screwed-up.
avatar
GamesRater: Likely(I got a few earlier, and i'm not using galaxy).

Btw, imo this is why one shouldn't make accusations of DRM on GOG(or GOG doing other bad things like DRM) without proof.

teceem: So you'd be sure that what you're saying isn't a pile of troll manure.
avatar
GamesRater: Tbh I don't think this is trolling as much as an indicator of a general trend i've seen in the world as of late: people (in general) assuming the worst or negative reasons for things more and more, instead of hoping for or assuming the best OR just looking into things first.

==============

Lazydog:
and that is a backdoor to update any offline installer in anyway gog sees fit.
avatar
GamesRater: So somehow GOG can update ones people have on offline external media as well?

Until this is proven, I ask you kindly to please stop spreading unproven rumors and FUD.
I'm glad this turned out to be benign, but assuming the worst is a life-skill today. Optimism is signing up to be a statistic. Wherever there is money, there is lying/cheating and not even the best companies are immune.
