I've had netflix for like half a year and to be really honest most of its production is mediocre to bad. Mindhunter is pretty much the only show where I could feel something of quality was being made. A few ofthers were cool and inventive but most of it is just normal tv on your computer.

And the witcher show was pretty bad.

They've been doing some interesting anime though. Loved Kakegurui. But the so called "classics" and "must see" shows of Netflix always seem to fall flat for me

Kakegurui was somewhat entertaining, but it's on the trashy side tho..

timppu: I generally have this issue that too often it seems they are just trying to prolong the series as long as they can, as long as people are willing to watch it.
Yeah, fillers and padding are terrible, even if it happened wayy more in the past.
Maybe the main problem nowadays is too easy cancellations.
avatar
timppu: What specifically amuses me about The Game of Thrones is how people tend to reveal their worst traumas and fears when discussing with someone they just met, or don't like that much. [..] REALLY? Is that how people talk to each other?
Would you prefer watching awkwad silence or discussions about the weather? :P
avatar
timppu: I prefer TV series which don't have a story connecting the different episodes
They're called "episodic". They're easier to follow, but they suffer from padding too.
I like both types of series, btw.
avatar
timppu: I admit I had hard time understanding lots of things in e.g. Avengers: Endgame as I hadn't seen many other Marvel movies before that apparently you should have watched before Endgame.
Oh boy, you watched Endgame without anything else before? Did you check it randomly? O_o
Avengers Infinity War was part1 (IMO the better one).
But yeah, they both required some other Marvel movies to be more understood\appreciated.
(the bare minimum was probably Iron Man1, Thor1, Avengers1, GotG1)

andysheets1975: I find a lot of the serialized shows made today suffer from bloated storytelling and they build to an ending that either never comes (show gets cancelled), or they fail the ending because it turns out the writers didn't actually know where they were going in the first place and they were just stringing everyone along the whole time.
True. And about the Mandalorian it's like the authors are creating the story on the go...
Luckly they did a decent job so far, but it could have been better.
And I wonder about the next seasons. I hope they won't be tied too much to the new crappy movies.

well it feels like a fanmade project just with enough cash to spend on effects, cloths and scenery
it also gives a small town feeling , like there are only a dozen people in it and some dozen extras for the background
universe is so small , they just jump here and there within seconds like it doesnt take more time than for you go to your neighbor

oh no , i wanted to watch it after the mandalorian :(

No, I would prefer heroic characters running towards a big battle.

Game of Thrones is mostly the latter, but with Alexis being topless with bare tits because bare tits is what makes GoT an "edgy" soap opera.

My wife wanted to go see some movie, so we picked that randomnly. I didn't see any "prerequisites needed" when buying the tickets to the movie. I thought we are going to see some grand action movie and have fun watching it. Instead, my wife got a splitting headache because we went to see it in a 3D cinema, and she has some problem watching them (that headache).

I had seen one or two Thor movies before that (I kinda liked at least the first one) and also Iron Man which was also quite enjoyable, but none of those black panthers or captain marvellousesses or insect men that were apparently also needed as a basic knowledge before the Endgame. (What I've seen before depended mostly what have been shown in the national Finnish TV, and e.g. the Thor movies had been shown. Maybe some Avengers movie too, oh and Iron Man movies too.)

Eh, series will rarely have the same budget of movies to afford many full scale battles (even if GoT had some later).
Also, pure action flicks are kinda boring for me.
GoT, instead, has some cool political intrigue and interesting characters (at least before s5).
That doesn't mean being equal to a soap opera lol (the new Battlestar Galactica was more like it).

Nah, those are skippable. I didn't see them and all was still quite understandable.
The main essential requisite was Avengers IW tho.

Radiance1979: In good Christmas tradition we decided on watching the mandalorian today, after some hassle with connecting the pc to the t.v., for example disney does not allow the use of most VPN's, took some time before i figured that one out! Oh and the surround set won't receive input from the t.v. with the current line of cables i'm using ( yes first order in the new year will be an extra long hdmi cabel and.. some proper cables used to connect tv and surround set ) we where finally set to start watching the mandalorian, now there is nothing wrong with the mandalorian as a show. it is proper disney with singing, miracle saves and some tears here and there but what did bother me is the length of each episode. The episodes vary between 50 mins and 33 mins... the whole 8 per season!

From games of thrones earlier it was already gathered that nowadays there seems to be a change from quantity to quality. this is shown both in number of episodes per season and quality of the effects etc used in one episode. Now while i do understand that particular line of thinking one of the drawbacks of the whole quality quantity thing seems to be the time left to actually tell a story

Now i won't be the one telling that older shows we liked to watch as a family such as, to keep things simple, Battle Star Galactica or Murder she Wrote..... Star Trek the next generation had the best stories of a lifetime but, they did seem to deliver on a couple of kernel facts that seem missed, or better said that i seem to miss in current day quality t.v.

Then the whole deal with series franchised by pay per view stations that won't even have the decency of loading up every season of certain shows because of disappointing viewer results they expect in advance

No, i fear the game world will be in the same situation as we find the home theater world in as of today, some decent shows that won't grow above mediocre and now and then some pearl from south korea that does come with both looks, graphics, gorgous k-pop women ( that are all trained in the sacred art of being a woman ) and nice stories
I'm probably not the best judge seeing how i have kept watching the various star trek series and i mean how long has the original been out? :P

Also KHAN!!!!

But i'm gathering your gripe is that shows are flashy and not deep or long.
Personally i think the story telling has gotten better and if we are being realistic the effects have had to keep up with the pace of advancement (won't be long until 8k is the standard).
I think though that the season length investment is short these days because we are sort of at this exploit transition phase.
What i mean is we use to have pay tv and it was exorbitant and not meant to have adds... then the company got greedy and had ads.
Then there was youtube and then that had lots of intrusive ads.
Then there was netflix and we suddenly had this holy grail of fair price and no ads so it took off...
and promptly became a victim of it's own success.
It's model was worked out and every tom dick and harry wanted to emulate them.
Now we have hulu and disney+ and binge and stan and prime video and hayu and the list goes on.
We now have exclusive deals and canned content that has wicked away the options that the new digital era once gleamed with promise of.
Nobody wants to be on the service with low numbers so they make things 'fun size' so they can move around should they need to.
Think of it as the 'gig economy' of the on demand tv era.
A wild west of inhumane & careless bean counter economics that don't care about giving you the best, but figuring out the best return for keeping captive your rodent psychology just enough to string your monthly plan along.
If they only have to have one good show, the better.
If they can shorten that show down paying for less original content; the better.
It's expected you will pay $60-70 a month for content that's why we have so many operators 'going it alone' to string you along on a pipe dream of a half decent service. :P
well yea more or less .....

and fact is, i am to easy a picking !

Every episode that little shaman girl in the asian fantasy series arthdale showed up i felt happy and was like ' YeaH ' this show is what i need

I really really appreciated the warrior women act in warrior nun, especially those scenes where the girls act their age, clothes showing that they are good to go for babies

Shows that contained more lines that i really really enjoy are

The last Kingdom

The whole christian dark age debacle, not to mention the problems of a male with a temper and a sense of honor

or something like the robinsons, all family guy type bla bla bla

so.. just to point out that i really don't have that a particular taste concerning my t.v. spending time

Of course the new Star Trek is lit.... even a soap operah would blush and shy away because of its mediocre twist plot turns

Now GoT indeed, right up until season 5 and then bam ..... but yea sometimes the creative process evolves in something not maybe so desired .......

All in all the offered explanation does seem to be in accordance with my own fears which will mean that i just have to be happy with looking at the occasional surprise and be done with it

brouer: I got the box set many years ago, but can’t recall ever coming across someone else who remembered it.
This is my solution to the in general terrible state of current produced TV shows/Films.

I wait and get them ater as a Box Set if they make it to 5 seasons or longer, and maybe if shorter it has to be exceptional (and nothing has been so far).

So on my 'Box Set' to get is The Orville and probably The Expanse, when they are done. I just don't watch shows on TV as they are put out now, mostly as 99% of the content is not interesting to me (like the terrible New Star Trek/Picard stuff) and those 1% of interest i can wait until they are finished or hit the 5 season mark.

All the more reason for me to prefer movies over TV series.

Meh. Mostly similar backstabbing and "political chicanery" as in soap operas like Bold and The Beautiful, Dynasty etc. The short fellow is somewhat interesting, but I grew tired of listening to his daddy issues.

Oh and the dragon lady seems like a real Mary Sue, at least what I've seen so far.

brouer: "That man makes Rambo look like Pee-Wee Herman."
I just re-watched the first Sledge Hammer episode. I couldn't stop laughing at:

Mayor (about his kidnapped daughter): "I don't care what methods you use, Hammer. Just bring back my daughter!".
Sledge Hammer: "I will, sir! Dead or alive."

Oh shit... :D
