Radiance1979: In good Christmas tradition we decided on watching the mandalorian today, after some hassle with connecting the pc to the t.v., for example disney does not allow the use of most VPN's, took some time before i figured that one out! Oh and the surround set won't receive input from the t.v. with the current line of cables i'm using ( yes first order in the new year will be an extra long hdmi cabel and.. some proper cables used to connect tv and surround set ) we where finally set to start watching the mandalorian, now there is nothing wrong with the mandalorian as a show. it is proper disney with singing, miracle saves and some tears here and there but what did bother me is the length of each episode. The episodes vary between 50 mins and 33 mins... the whole 8 per season!
From games of thrones earlier it was already gathered that nowadays there seems to be a change from quantity to quality. this is shown both in number of episodes per season and quality of the effects etc used in one episode. Now while i do understand that particular line of thinking one of the drawbacks of the whole quality quantity thing seems to be the time left to actually tell a story
Now i won't be the one telling that older shows we liked to watch as a family such as, to keep things simple, Battle Star Galactica or Murder she Wrote..... Star Trek the next generation had the best stories of a lifetime but, they did seem to deliver on a couple of kernel facts that seem missed, or better said that i seem to miss in current day quality t.v.
Then the whole deal with series franchised by pay per view stations that won't even have the decency of loading up every season of certain shows because of disappointing viewer results they expect in advance
No, i fear the game world will be in the same situation as we find the home theater world in as of today, some decent shows that won't grow above mediocre and now and then some pearl from south korea that does come with both looks, graphics, gorgous k-pop women ( that are all trained in the sacred art of being a woman ) and nice stories
I'm probably not the best judge seeing how i have kept watching the various star trek series and i mean how long has the original been out? :P
Also KHAN!!!!
But i'm gathering your gripe is that shows are flashy and not deep or long.
Personally i think the story telling has gotten better and if we are being realistic the effects have had to keep up with the pace of advancement (won't be long until 8k is the standard).
I think though that the season length investment is short these days because we are sort of at this exploit transition phase.
What i mean is we use to have pay tv and it was exorbitant and not meant to have adds... then the company got greedy and had ads.
Then there was youtube and then that had lots of intrusive ads.
Then there was netflix and we suddenly had this holy grail of fair price and no ads so it took off...
and promptly became a victim of it's own success.
It's model was worked out and every tom dick and harry wanted to emulate them.
Now we have hulu and disney+ and binge and stan and prime video and hayu and the list goes on.
We now have exclusive deals and canned content that has wicked away the options that the new digital era once gleamed with promise of.
Nobody wants to be on the service with low numbers so they make things 'fun size' so they can move around should they need to.
Think of it as the 'gig economy' of the on demand tv era.
A wild west of inhumane & careless bean counter economics that don't care about giving you the best, but figuring out the best return for keeping captive your rodent psychology just enough to string your monthly plan along.
If they only have to have one good show, the better.
If they can shorten that show down paying for less original content; the better.
It's expected you will pay $60-70 a month for content that's why we have so many operators 'going it alone' to string you along on a pipe dream of a half decent service. :P
