Title says it all. I used to have vivid memories of playing what I thought was the sequel Ghost Recon 2, sometime in the early-to-mid 2000s. So I was really excited to find that game after I bought and played through the first Ghost Recon here on GOG a few years back..

I was so surprised to discover that Ghost Recon 2 was in fact a console exclusive *third person shooter.* There's no way in hell I ever played that; I've never had a console.

Yet still I had vivid memories of playing a contemporary first person shooter doing tactical small-squad missions in outdoor environments? What the heck is that game? Or was it all just a dream?

Before you make suggestion, let's consider a few titles:

- I know for a fact that I've never played ArmA (I wish I had, and I wish I'd bought it before they pulled it from GOG). It's probably too new to be the game I'm thinking of, and if it's anything like Operation Flashpoint, it's got too large an open environment to be the game I'm thinking of.

- It's not Call of Duty or Call of Duty 2. These games are from the right era, but the game I think of probably had somewhat more open (less linear) level design (like the first Ghost Recon). I also don't remember running for health packs like you do (I think you do) in the first Call of Duty. I'm not sure if there was any healing mechanism.

- It probably isn't a Rainbow Six title, although I'm not 100% certain. I know I played one of these (likely Raven Shield) during that era, but IIRC that's much more urban/indoor/small-space game than the one I'm thinking of. Again, somewhat more open GR1-style militaryish green outdoor scenes with some buildings and the occasional road are what I have in mind.

- Not MOHAA, definitely not RTCW.

- Not Men of Valor. I haven't played Vietcong.

- No, it was not one of the GR1 expansion packs.

I wonder if this is another one of these games that never existed and yet I somehow got memories of playing :( Wouldn't be the first one.. it drives me maad.

Sum Off All Fears, maybe?
It was a movie tie in that used the Ghost Recon engine;if you were familiar with Ghost Recon you need not need to take the turorials. It quite literally plays the same way..same exact controls.
The Advanced Warfighter games were first-person on PC, but those mostly took place in urban areas compared to the more rural GR1.

Could you be mistaking 'sequel' for 'expansion'? The original GR on PC had two mission packs.

Holy shit now that looks like an obscure title. Never heard of it!

I took a look at a gameplay video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQ_NifdacMs) and I'm pretty sure I've never played this one :) Looks like rainbow six meets ghost recon. Interesting concept.

Yeah, looks very very urban, and not familiar. And probably too modern (both technically and thematically) to be the game I'm thinking of.

Probably not. I have the mission packs, but I think I played something a little more modern after the first Ghost Recon.

Is it maybe any of the Delta Force games? I love those.
Small squad based games in outdoor environments. Kind of like Rainbow Six/Ghost Recon, only the Lite version. They are right here on GOG.

Oh right, that's one series I kinda forgot to look into.

I know I played one of the early delta force demos, but I have no recollection of any later title in the series. Let me check it out, though I suspect this isn't it either.
Ok so the Delta Force demo I played was one of the first three games, probably Land Warrior. Too old to be the Ghost Recon sequel I was thinking of, also the levels seem too open for that.

Urban Warfare was a console exclusive so it can't be that one.

Now Black Hawk Down is interesting; it fits the timeline to be a "Ghost Recon sequel," and technically looks somewhat like what I had in mind too. That said I have no memory of desert missions, large open vehicle segments, let alone shooting a minigun in a helicopter, so I suspect this can't be the title I'm thinking of. Also it sill seems maybe a little too open/large scale, although I'd probably have to watch a LP or play it to get a feel for that aspect. Definitely a title I'm gonna want to check out, but probably not "it".

Xtreme also kinda fits the timeline and certainly doesn't look "too new," but it probably isn't it either. Most of the same feelings that apply to Black Hawk Down should apply here too.

What scenario(s) are we talking about? No desert missions, ok - but apart from that?

Jungle? Urban environment? Taiga-like? Prairie?
In winter and/or summer?

And what era are we talking here?
WW2, Cold War, something more confined (Vietnam, Korea)...

Any bit of info you can give might be useful.

Could it be Shadow Ops, or is 2004 too late?

Summer, European (maybe British/French/Germany) rural & small town style locales come to mind.

Probably "modern era" (or what would've been modern in 2000, i.e. roughly the same as Ghost Recon 1), although there's a small chance it could've been older, up to WWII (but I don't think it was).

No dice :( I think these lists on Wikipedia tend to be quite lacking.

Not it, but 2004 probably isn't too late.

Last ditch attempt (since I.G.I. 2 is not squad-based, I suppose): Global Operations?

Probably not one of these either (too new, wrong setting) - but have a look anyway:

"Hidden & Dangerous" games (1999, WW II)
"Deadly Dozen" games(2001, WW II)
"Conflict: Global Terror" (2005, Modern, around the globe >>>third person perspective<<<)
"Conflict: Denied Ops" (2008, Modern, Venezuela, >>>first person perspective<<<)
"SAS: Secure Tomorrow" (2008, Modern, UK, Iceland, etc.)
