I figure maybe the chance goes up? Thoughts?

I would say the opposite. Companies doing remasters tend to remove the original to sell the remaster version better as some people prefer original. It's not always the case but relatively often. And actually... was there any case that the original had been promoted (added to new stores etc.) while a remastered version had been made?

As Ghorpm said, they do remasters because they want to drive the price of old games back up (which means removing the old versions from sale). So the chances of seeing Diablo 2 Classic on GOG are the same as Age of Empires 1-2 Classic on GOG for £7 whilst the "Defitinitive HD" is on Steam for £30 - virtually non-existent. If you want the originals, you could always do what I did and just grab a disc off EBay. As of patch 1.12, the game officially supports running without needing the CD inserted (DRM has already effectively been removed in a patch). Likewise there's a high-resolution patch that allows running at 1080p at 1.12 as well.

To my knowledge, Diablo 2 Remaster is unlikely to happen because the original assets are lost. That is, besides the actual source code (and you'd be surprised how often the source code of an older game is lost apparently), the original 3D models that were used to render the sprites. These would be needed for an HD remaster that doesn't just increase the resolution, which would make everything smaller, but not more detailed. True, other remasters apparently remake these from scratch, but the large amount of creatures and character animations would be a lot of work and it would be difficult to match the original aesthetics. These days, a lot of RTS games seem to get remasters, but they might have a more manageable amount of buildings and units in comparison.

Still, it's not impossible, and while my Diablo days are clearly behind me (I didn't even touch 3), it would certainly be great for many players.

Blizzard has given away the non-remastered version of Starcraft/Brood War for free (which is even running on the same codebase and patch level as the remaster IIRC).
So its not beyond the realms of possibility that they would do the same if they ever did a Diablo II remaster. (they are doing a Warcraft III remaster, maybe they will give Warcraft III away as part of that...)

That's true, I forgot about it. On the other hand they made it free on their own store so while we may see Diablo 2 going free it's still unlikely to appear here
Still all up to Blizzard.
D2 Remaster rumor never eventuated...

Yeah, a lot of people expected D2 Remaster announcement during the Blizzcon. Paradoxically the lack of it increases the chances that we'll see D2 on GOG someday.
i think some of the fan mods for diablo 2 have been excellent added in so many things the original lacks , not sure how blizzard plan to do the remaster , given there is still a decent player base that still play diablo 2 on ladder.

Hopefully the chances are good.....but we could always ask the magic 8 ball.

Eh, some games have been redone without the assets or someone finds a copy of the source somewhere....so here's hoping.

I myself lost my source files to the game I made years back due to a pc crash and not saving, so yeah it happens(sadly).

Let em work hard....they should if they want to earn that money. And if the stuff isn't 100% accurate(but still around 95%+ close to it) why care so much?

I'd totally see them dropping such here or elsewhere for a low price to sweep the current PR mess under the rug.

That would technically be a remake, not a remaster, but apart from that, remaking everything from scratch will never look (or play) exactly like the original, and there would always be people who dislike the new look. Not that it would be any different for other remasters, including Starcraft.

Yes, but if it's 95%+ like the old game then(to me) it is basically the same....mainly only those obsessed with details worry about it beyond that, and to me that is no way to game(overly obsessed and nitpicky).
Not sure. While nice to see, and having gotten some Blizzard items, i don't see why not.

Though i'd have liked to see the 1.09d source, modify it to use 64bit variables and more open to modding.

Example. It probably uses ints, 32bit, or 4billion as it's top number. It's probably signed, dropping to 2 billion. Its damage/health values are 100 times larger so they have effectively fractions (fixed point, allowing damage over time); So now it goes to 20 Million for a max value.

In reality the limits are quite reasonable for the vanilla game... but with hacking and modding those limits soon became quite an issue later.

In Zy-El Kato the creator had issues where he ran out of room for making recipes... he had like 400 Million recipes...

Item + 6 potions + 1 thaw -> Icon miniature of original item for storage
1 miniature item + key -> usable item
Now do this for 10,000 items...
Not to mention the 'gambling' where you used a 7 card poker game to get rewards..

He also did convenience recipes. So i put 3 chipped to get a flawed. What if i put 3 chipped and 2 flawed in? I get a standard. Etc.

Just saying a little work can go a long ways.
