Going public is always a bad idea.

Uber, Twitter, Dropbox, Airbnb, Zillow, Wework, Snapchat....

and those are companies where the entirety of the organisation is loss making, rather than just a small bit of a larger company.

Tesla is in a similar position; its car manufacturing is loss making, although the company itself turns a profit by trading emissions credits.
