the difference is in most FPS you can't go out of 1st person mode, you see everything like you were carring the weapon yourself
where as you can go out of 1st person perspective by hot keys or mouse wheel.
FPS
I'm the same way. Most of what I have are First Person Shooters.

I'm not really sure what Stalker would be classified as, but I agree. It can be slow.

Here are some straight forward FPS games I have on GOG that I enjoyed (not counting the ones you mentioned):

Doom & Doom II - The old games from the 1990s. I recommend the unofficial source port gzdoom to modernize the controls and support widescreen. Try out gzdoom with the demo of Doom first to see if you're ok with the older looking graphics. GZdoom may take several minutes of tweaking in the menus before it plays how you want.

Doom 3 BFG - slow paced shooter. The game is slow to start, but eventually the action becomes more consistent, but although not frequent.

Quake 1, 2, 3, & 4 (Quake 3 is a multiplayer game that uses bots instead of humans so you can play offline).

Fear 2

Unreal - classic shooter. Slower than games like Quake and Doom, but still has frantic moments. More action than Stalker though.

Unreal 2004 - Another multiplayer arena shooter with bots (like Quake 3). A good game for when you just want to run around and shoot without thinking. I only play with bots.

Painkiller - over the top, lots of shooting with ragdoll physics galore. Has an area based system like the newer Doom game (enter room, kill all enemies to open next door, proceed to next area). Boss battles can be incredibly dull and slow though.

---

Far Cry 2 is probably too slow. There are long stretches without action and dying can sometimes mess up your progress a lot.

Timeshift and Singularity are also pretty good (some light time manipulation mechanics in both), but wait to get them on sale.

jeeves01: ...
When it comes to FPS you might want to check this(Gggmanlives) youtube channel, from your fellow contryman. The guy does a terrific job at reviewing old and new FPS games, and seems fond of GOG.
OK. Thanks.
Just to clarify...these are the games i like...Far Cry (original). I tried FC 2 and hated it. Just like the stalker game i dislike. I also like Crysis and Doom (2016) and also FEAR. I am just going to get Titanfall2 ...it's on discount from Origin..i might go for the extra version, Platinum or whatever, and it is about $30.
I guess those examples would clear up my preferences. Load 'em up and start shooting and a bit of mucking around like in Doom is fine but a big NO to the STALKER style of thing. Just not for me.
Thanks for the help and i will try a few out.

I get bored after 5 minutes when playing these "shoot first, think later... or never" kind of games.
So, jeeves01, all the games I don't care for - you'll love them! ;-)
I'm the opposite. I bought Metro 2033, think that is what it was called, not sure where i read that it was good but i am over it already. I made something to eat, washed the car, had a beer, a quick nap and still it was going on and on before i could fire a shot...UNINSTALL!!!
Seemed very much like Stalker and i'm afraid i'm not impressed with the graphics at all.
I can see this is going to cost me a fair bit until i find what i like.
I am really enjoying Doom but i am stuck at a single monster that i am having trouble killing...even had to dumb it down to the low level but can't get past him....anyway...thanks for the suggestions...i guess i will just have to pay and discard to build up my library.
You'd probably enjoy Serious Same BFE. If you can somehow find it, the original Prey might be up your alley too.
Oh, and maybe Bulletstorm.
Did you try Shadow Warrior (2013), OP? There aren't a lot of current shooters that give me the rush that stuff like FEAR does, but that's certainly one of them. Actually, anything by Flying Wild Hog might be a good choice.

jeeves01: Anyway, after reading a few lists of best FPS i just got STALKER Call of Pripyat and i hate it! too slow and too much mucking around for me. after further reading i think it is classed as a FPP and not a FPS is thi correct?
No. STALKER is also FPS but with open world and much mix-ins from othe genres. I played it only a short time, so I can't confirm it's pacing is indeed too slow.

jeeves01: Anyone got any suggestions for games as listed above, i'll add that i love DOOM 2016 but that us about as complicated as i want to get.
Painkiller, Serious Sam, BioShock Infinite. Probably later installemnts of Far Cry (though they too have a lot of open world design).
I actually enjoyed Hard Reset more than the new Shadow Warrior. There's also the new Rise of the Triad, and you can try Tower of Guns for procedurally generated roguelike FPSing fun.
Does it need to be on here? If so shadow warrior 2013 is excellent, hard reset is also not to bad. I agree, really don't see the popularity of metro as its dull as hell. Stalker is ok further on.
If it's not on here the farcry 3, primal, 4 (in order of preference) are all great. Ignore all the stupid collectibles (it's unfortunately the way ubi makes games) and play them as fps, good fun then.
Wolfenstein new order and old blood are also pretty good though 2 is pretty dire.
FPP: First person perspective. This can be anything in the genre, an adventure or puzzle game such as the Myst series, Portal, Legend of Grimrock, even Minecraft.

FPS: First person shooter. First things that come to mind here are Quake, Unreal Tournament, Crysis. Technically speaking FPS shooters are also FPP games.

I love Doom 2016. That is about as much as i want to think. I really like the simplicity of things like the original Far Cry. I found Far Cry 2 to be pretty ordinary and i was very disapointed. Crysis is my style also. I unterstand Far Cry 4 was a lot better but i deadset don't want to be 'taliking' to people and collecting stuff.
Thanks for all the help.
