It's not personal. I think "friending" reeks of elitism.

I don't like "friending" either, but on the other hand why should we dictate that someone can't have a spam-and-abuse safe setting and still talk to us?

I never said that my opinion had any merit to it. :P I may be totally wrong here, but I just don't like friending. It also reminds me of Facebook too much.

I'm perfectly willing to accept that my take on this is nothing more than the product of my own screwed up mind.

I for one am flattered when someone wants to troll me. To think they are taking precious moments from their day and using them to pester me; it's very humbling.

I don't think you quite understand - I don't like friending either. But if you don't allow for it, then you are in fact NOT letting everyone PM you- only people with the same "free for all" settings. So you're basically forcing people to either not be able to talk to you, or change their settings just for you. If you really want truly everyone to be able to talk to you, you need to keep your settings to everyone, and accept friend invites from those people who set it to "friends only".
