Hi,

The FAQ for GOG Connect discusses what information from Steam comes to GOG but nothing about the other direction. Does anyone know what information Steam gets from GOG from making the Connect-ion? Any reason NOT to do GOG Connect? I might want to take advantage of the titles that are going to expire in a couple of days.

Nothing they don't already have.

You're basically using a system Valve created to let 3rd party users (like GOG) specifically identify a person's Steam profile (by having them log in through Steam). Steam then confirms that's their legitimate profile (since they have access) and shares the profile info with GOG.

Basically you're pointing at a Steam profile, Valve confirms to GOG that's your profile, and then GOG checks it to see if you own the games the devs are temporarily offering a free duplicate of on GOG.

There's no nefarious link between GOG or Steam. It's just GOG reading your profile after having identified with Valve's system that it's actually your profile. That identification system is something Valve made a long time ago and is freely available for third parties to use (assuming they don't use it for bad practices, like gambling). It's what makes it so easy for GOG to offer GOG connect, because Valve offers an easy way to confirm what games you have in their library.

Thank you! I trust GOG to not be nefarious but less so with steam. I wondered if the use of Steam's interface had a reciprocal type agreement, "I'll check the steam credentials for you if you give me the corresponding ones on your site" or some such.

Thanks again. I guess then the only hesitation (about doing GOG Connect) I can think of is if you're not sure what account to link to (since it can't be undone). Agreed?

Yes, since you can only link one account make sure that one is the one you want linked permanently.
