Ok Finally I have installed the first version of the game, the combo dos win95 version, and it appears to be cd ready preinstalled for the dos/win version. The edits I pointed are not needed at all, they are already present in the sg.conf. The only action to do is create the shortcut following the directions in the page.

From the web page:

"To comfortably run the DOS game you will need to make some edits first. Make sure you have DOSBox installed. Create DOSBox shortcut if you do not have one already. Right click on DOSBox shortcut and select Properties. In Shortcut tab under Target text field leave everything as is and add -conf SG.conf -noconsole with space behind existing text. In Start in text field replace existing text with the one that matches path to the location of SG.conf. Path will depend on the location of your game folder and SG.conf is file in the root of the game folder. Now if you click on the DOSBox shortcut it will run the game."

And yes, the win95 exe works fine and smooth under win10. Of course without audio tracks because they are specifically ready for the dos version, this time converted to ogg and loaded under the cue. Pretty the same as the Fantasy version in GOG.

But I am curious about which functionallity or changes exist between the dos and win95 version. I am pretty sure they were just the same version with a different port. They are the same game.

So run the game from dosbox following the instructions above just to compare any difference between versions.

I am going to reply myself about one of the differences between dos and win95 versions at least in the 1.1 version:

From the readme.

-Huge, and Vast maps are not available in the war setup for the DOS version of the game.

Indeed, Only this alone does make the win95 version more convenient for the random and custom games part of the game.

I found a workaround to have the Music working under the win95 version of Star General.

-First you will need some files present in the Imperialism GOG Game. Those files are availale to download externally from the web but if you own Imperialism or other game that make use of them they are valid and faster to try.
The files are: libogg-0.dll, libvorbis-0.dll, libvorbisfile-3.dll and winmm.dll. Copy and place them in the star general folder.

-Into the star general game folder you will find a subfolder called CD, rename it to MUSIC. Backup it previously if you want. The CD Folder is needed to the functionality of the DOS version.

-Into the renamed MUSIC subfolder you will find a series of 24 ogg music files called "Star General - TrackXX.ogg"
Rename them to simply TrackXX.ogg

-Run the windows version through the SGWIN.bat and voila, the game should have functional music.

I have not tested it deeply. Probably it has issues or tracks looping or music stopping etc... But well, better than nothing. And Who knows, maybe it works perfect.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I've taken a look at the games you posted.

So far, what interested me the most was Star General, can't believe I missed this game from the General series, even though I already have Fantasy and Panzer General, but looking around it seems GOG hasn't added it yet to its catalogue, which is a shame.

Regenade Legion: Interceptor and Space Empires IV caught my attention too. Renegade looks like exactly what I'm looking for, and though Space Empires IV looks like pretty much the opposite of what I wanted, it still seems like a good game.

Anyways, I've added pretty much most of the games you all posted to my wishlist with the exception of RTS games, not really a fan of these kind of games, mostly because I suck at them. I have Homeworld Emergence on my library but I actually prefered to watch a LP on youtube than play it, due to my incompetence.

And I actually already own Space Rangers 2 HD and FTL, fantastic games, not exactly what I was looking for, but I recommend it to anyone on this thread which didn't play them already.
I've heard that some of the space hulk games are very good. Thought that's more tactical rpg territory I think, iirc taking place on derelict space ships usually infected with tyranids.
