It appears, I can't run the exe installer for quite a few games. A very strange example is Terraria.

I was able to succesfully install it via setup_terraria_2.0.0.1.exe and run it absolutely fine.

Then there was a Terarria update. I tried several installers:

setup_terraria_2.1.0.2.exe
setup_terraria_2.3.0.5.exe
setup_terraria_2.5.0.7.exe
setup_terraria_2.7.0.9.exe

When double clicking them, it's like some task is busy for a few seconds (but nothing shown on screen). Then it's like I never clicked it. No error message or something.

Same with some other games e.g.

Don't Starve (setup_dont_starve_2.8.0.18.exe)

Also happening to very old games e.g. Dungeon Keeper Gold (setup_dungeon_keeper_gold_2.1.0.6.exe).

All of the games should run on XP fine according to the description. Any ideas how to solve it like with some sort of compatibility mode? Might it have something to do with the recent attempt to make all the games compatible to Win10?

edit: I can add some more games to the installer not starting list:

Paper Sorcerer (setup_paper_sorcerer_2.3.0.6.exe)
Witcher Adventure Game (setup_the_witcher_adventure_game_2.4.0.23.exe)

Interestingly the installer to Dungeon Keeper 2 is working while the one to Dungeon Keeper 1 does not ...

I really hope there is one tech wizard among you able to help me out. Update needs to wait till I buy a new computer in about a year. :-/

You should at least update your Windows XP to SP3 with all updates. But I wouldn't recommend you to use this OS if you want to surf in the internet. Support from Microsoft has stopped since some months. You won't get any new security updates.
Anyway you really should install SP3 and see if this solves your problem.

I had a similar issue with my old XP computer. It sometimes took 5 or 10 minutes for the installer to pop up, but it would pop up eventually if you were patient. I vaguely remember someone mentioning this having to do with User Account Control (UAC) and that there is a way to turn this off in Control Panel which might be worth trying.

Looked it up, there is a "Never Notify" setting that one can use.

Technically you`re right, but support for Win XP (SP 3) ended april 8 2014, nearly 1 1/2 years ago. So I would recommend to upgrade to Win 7.
Update packs can be downloaded from there:

It's german, but well, have a look.

That shouldn't be a problem because GoombaBrother is from Austria.

As I said before I wouldn't recommend to use Windows XP if you want to stay online.

Well, sometimes a second opinion might help if one is not sure. :-)

The updates are still available, they just aren't providing any new patches.

My guess is that they'll take the updates down the same time they take the activation servers down. I've personally installed my XP copies into virtual machines, so I shouldn't have to worry about that. Vista will get installed in a VM as well at some point along with 10.

One nice thing about VMs is that it's trivial to keep a clean install ready as needed.
