33-75% off NEO Scavenger, Pier Solar, Elminage Gothic and Paper Sorcerer.

We're big fans of RPGs. Real time or turn based, first person or isometric. jRPGs, cRPGs, aRPGs. We just love... allRPGs. On today's episode of Weekly Staff Picks we've got a selection of four RPG wonders... each perfectly unique in its very own way.

NEO Scavenger is 2014's indie sweetheart surprise that stole our collective hearts, then stomped all over them in a blend of RPG, survival, and dysentery. Nobody's saying surviving in a post-apocalyptic universe is easy, but you could at least try... More challenge awaits in Elminage Gothic, a peculiar dungeon crawler from the makers of the "Wizardry Empire", for the biggest fans. It's classic, it's complex, and it refuses to hold your hand. It's nothing personal, it just grew up in a different time. For a lighter twist on the classic dungeon crawler, check out Paper Sorcerer - it's a turn-based RPG with an absolutely unique art style and gameplay that's tastefully old school with modern tropes. Finally, there's Pier Solar and the Great Architects - released in 2010... on the SEGA Mega Drive and SEGA Genesis. It was a product of love for the jRPG and the classic consoles. Pier Solar has since been ported to several systems including the PC, but despite upgraded graphics the old-school charm remains strong.

Celebrate a week of 66% off Halfway - an anniversary of the pixelated alien hell.

Available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, Halfway is a throwback to the tough and lonely roots of tactical turn-based gaming. You're a lone space marine trapped in a floating, steel graveyard - the colonial vessel Goliath. Your only hope for survival is to gather anyone else who may still live and truly face your fears. Step by step, you'll uncover the mysterious events that took place aboard the ship - and send it straight to hell. Outsmart increasingly challenging enemies in an X-Com inspired adventure that will draw you in with its haunting soundtrack.

July 22 marks the one day that the uncompromising turn based indie gem turns one year old. To celebrate the anniversary you can now get the game for 66% off! The promo will last for an entire week, until July 26, 9:59 AM.

We'd never commit to a single type of RPG, we just plain ol' love allRPGs. You can pick up four of our favourite ones today, at up to 75% off until Thursday, July 23, 9:59 AM GMT.

Lemonjack: So how's Elminage Gothic? Any good, worth $2.50? It' probably no Legend of Grimrock, but I might give it a try if it's decent.
I enjoyed Elminage Gothic a lot. It is essentially a modernized version of the earlier Wizardry games, complete with a similar magic system and many similar gameplay elements. It is not like Legend of Grimrock at all; Grimrock is a modernized Dungeon Master with dissimilar mechanics, while Elminage is a modernized Wizardry 1.

I should warn you, however: after the first dungeon, the game can get rather brutal. Enemies start gaining the ability to instant kill your characters (and resurrection is unreliable and ages the character), hit your back row (with spells or long range attacks), and even drain levels from your characters (remember that from early cRPGs?).

The game has a lot of content: I have spent around 100 hours of the game and I still have 14 dungeon levels left to explore, not to mention multiple superbosses to fight.

On the other hand, I would like to know how Pier Solar is.

I really like Pier Solar. If you enjoy classical jRPGs from SNES, then it's worth having. However, for gamers that have no such experience the cultural shock may be too much. There is a full review on hardcoregaming101.net btw.

Thanks for the tips, but I can't really see myself finishing it. Maybe it's just a bug and not everyone gets it, but other than the guaranteed close combat attacks I'd say I only hit with about 1 in 5 attacks regardless of actual hit chance. The RNG was definitely broken. Combined with the ammo system and lack of carrying space it just made it needlessly difficult to win as I could burn through s characters whole supply of ammo to kill one or two enemies some times...

This is very odd indeed, maybe it's not the game but that you have unnaturally bad luck? I never ran out of ammo mid-mission even in hard mode where the enemies can take vastly more damage. The only thing I ran out of where medikits in some missions, with one situation being particularly tough because one had to fight several missions in a row without being able to resupply at base. That was the only time all but one of my character got knocked out (in hard mode). It was a scene that makes Aliens 2 and the SEAL ambush in The Rock pale in comparison. A real clusterfuck, if you pardon my language. Still fun though!

Only 6.3% finish the game but that isn't too outlandish considering most people just have way too many games and therefor don't feel compelled to finish everything - myself included, I play a lot of games but finish only some of them. I follow the rule that if it stops being fun for more than 1,5-2 hours max, I abandon the game for good.
So if you didn't enjoy the game, that's not all too tragic as you surely have plenty of other stuff to play. I see all game expenses as a "flat rate" meaning I don't say to myself oh my I spent 10 bucks on that game and only played it for 2 hours etc.

The reason why I "ambush" people who criticize Halfway is not just because I want the developers to get the kudos they (rightly) deserve. I also want the developer to make a sequel so that I can have more fun. So far, Halfway has not yet sold enough units to cover the development costs, you can check out the details here:

l would appreciate it if Robotality, the devs of Halfway would make a Demo of their game.

I'll get me some "tasty ice cream" in the form of Pier Solar to rejoice over the summer! :)
As predicted by Judas, the update for v2.5 of Paper Sorcerer has arrived :)

Hmm, no Tux? Well I bought Paper Sorcerer from dev site back then and there is a 2.5 Linux version. I wonder why it is not also available here.
