If you worked in IT - and specifically as either a programmer or database dork - in the late 90s (and it sounds like you didn't) then yes, Y2K was a pain in the ass. For the rest of the world, nope. It was no problem, but it was no problem because we knew ahead of time that it could be a huge problem. Stitch in time, and all that.

The show is My Name is Earl. I found the first 2 seasons hilarious, but it kinda started going a little bit downhill somewhere in the 3d or 4th season.

Yes; but most devices that would be affected by Y2K were decrepit, but somewhat able to be accounted for. There was a Dilbert episode on it too.

If you were in IT, it was partially a mad scramble to fix the sins of those who'd gone before, and partially a monumental triumph over human stupidity (after everything was fixed).

It didn't cause problems was because the warnings were motivating enough to get managers to authorize expending the effort to fix it.

I read that one subway displayed the date as 1/1/100.

By the way, a similar issue will occur in January of 2038, where 32-bit Unix time_t rolls around, and it will probably have a similar impact (except the date would be in 1970).
