Did someone purchase Peter Jackson's King Kong from Gamersgate when the game was still available? King Kong was labeled as "DRM-free", but one person said it even required Uplay.

Yeah I'm necroposting this thread, too. They removed some payment options inhere (I used it on last june) with absolutely telling no one about it. Shot them an email and got a dull answer back. Not trying to be an a-hole but a little more professionalism would be appreciated, GG dudes ;)

Necro or not, interesting you brought that up. I always kicked myself in the head I didn't buy the GG version of King Kong, as I was lead to believe it had enhanced graphics and worked somewhat better with modern machines. I have the original CD (DVD?) version of King Kong, actually I got it for free because someone at my workplace gave it for free, but AFAIK it doesn't work in Windows 7 at all, only in XP. And I don't think my XP machine is fast enough to run the game so I guess I will never play that game.

Anyway, what you said makes me kinda happy I didn't buy the GamersGate version either. :) It sounds quite silly it was indeed marketed as DRM-free, yet it would require UPlay?

Anyway, the few DRM-free games I have from GamersGate (e.g. Alpha Protocol etc.), I have securely backed up to my hard drive, and I will never visit GG again. I am kinda surprised they are still around, I wouldn't be surprised they close their doors.

If you can do that you shouldn't be messing around in here, you should be on TV or working for Cirque du Soleil.

Technically, the game could still be "DRM-free" if there is no DRM in the Uplay version. Some Uplay games such as Rayman Origins are free of DRM, but in this case the game should be marked as "Uplay key".

Technical issues are most likely caused by Starforce. I have the cracked release and launched the game just minutes ago on Windows 10.
I bought Commandos: Strike Force from GamersGate (since it's not available in Steam for years), and it is DRM Free as they announced. No client required to run the game, and no securom in the exe either.

Same here, same game. Quite simple client but nowhere as good as GOG delivers.
^^I agree. It would be A LOT nice to see this game on GOG one day. One can dream, right? The Suffering is here now :)

You can take backup of the setup files that the gamersgate downloader downloads. Search pcgamingwiki...

Most of the CI Games on gamersgate are DRM free, although some of the titles in my library have since been replaced with a steam key.

Not really an issue for me though, as I mostly care about DRM in the sense that I would be able to play the game in the forseable future.

Miaghstir: The GPL and BSD licenses are DRM!

Sure, they say "you can do an awful lot", but they still say what you can do. I'm less sure of BSD, but GPL also says: "you cannot distribute a binary compiled from modified source without also distributing your modifications of the source".

The licenses manage what rights you have to your digital data: Digital Rights Management.

... well, depending on how broad a definition we use...
Well FreeBSD type licenses are just attribution only, they are as close to public domain as possible like Creative Commons Attribution but GPL is a sort of reciprocation on keeping it libre, prevents prioritization by keeping source free/open/available

Any reason you picked that specific 12-year-old post to reply to?
