Even up the final expansion Soulstorm the game just feels un-polished. Especially after playing more recent RTSes.

The unit pathfinding in this game is GOD AWFUL, I mean the moment I get large armies of units that all just run all scattered and disorginzed like by the time say one sqaud of space marines go to where I point them to, 3 other squads are still trying to catch up.

And judging from the campaign I find vehicles overpowered like as Space Marines so long as I have 2 Dreadnoughts and Predator Tanks I am pretty much invincible.

Oh and that is another thing this game sufferes from because sometimes units on their own feels way to strong in that they take a LONG while to kill. Don't get me started on Daemon Princes, and even than certain vehicles can take such a hit its insane.

I don't know mabye I have been ridiculously spoiled by Starcraft 2 and how smooth its unit AI pathfinding is and how balanced to a mirrorsheen it is.
That was not my experience at all. I think Dawn of War : Dark Crusade offers some of the finest rts single player and multiplayer experiences out there, with 7 remarkably well balanced sides. At least up to Soulstorm that is. I haven't played the game much beyond whatever balance changes they introduced post Soulstorm to try and balance the 9 sides.

I'm surprised to hear about path finding issues, since I can't remember ever encountering any, at least not in Dark Crusade which I played the most. Moving and engaging full sized armies was a completely painless affair for me on that front.

Vehicles are incredibly powerful yes, but not overpowered. Any vehicle, including the mighty baneblade can easily be taken out by anti vehicle weapons. But god help any foe of yours if they don't have an answer for vehicle armour.

There are several different armour classes in the game: infantry-low, infantry-medium, infantry-high, infantry-commander, vehicle-low, vehicle-high,daemon etc etc etc
And weapons can range from very weak to very strong against any of these classes. Have a look at the damage ratings of the weapons on a dreadnaught for example:
http://warhammer-game.narod.ru/wiki/Dreadnought.html

You mention daemon princes? They have daemon armour. Give me some grey knights and the force commander, and I'll kill it for you quick quick :) Both have very high damage values against daemons. I don't imagine the prince will survive even 10 seconds against a combined force commander grey knight squad.
So it goes for everything. Anything can be killed quickly and violently if you know what to use. I didn't come across anything from any race that another race didn't have an answer for. Soulstorm excluded perhaps because I didn't play that much.

It's not all sunshine and roses though I'll admit: Dawn of War 1 does have a really weak campaign that doesn't hold up very well today anymore. However at the time it was an absolute spectacle to behold. The graphics and chaos of battle were absolutely eye watering at the time. Now only the awesome 'chaos' of battle remains along with glorious voice of Gabriel Angelos.
I read that winter Assault has a highly regarded campaign, but I personally found the early levels incredibly protracted. I always get too fatigued with the campaign to continue whenever I try to finish it.
Other than that, Soulstorm was a complete letdown for me. Imo the game didn't have space left for air units and two whole new factions that used special 'mana' based mechanics. Dark Crusade is the pinacle of the series for me.

Personally I rate Dark Crusade as the 2nd best RTS I've ever played, after Warcraft 3. I love Starcraft 1 and 2 as well, but they are massively different games and I simply feel more comfortable with Dawn of War's style of gameplay. Also, Starcraft doesn't have sync kills.

Use this.

But yes, I agree, it is great when units actually packa puncha nd can take some beating.
Not like those other games where the strongest units falls apart after 2 seconds of fire.
I've only played the base game.
I enjoyed it, but yes, it wasn't certainly at the level of Starcraft.
Still, it was a good 7-8\10 for me.
I agree on the pathfinding, which can occasionally be a pain. I think the reasons for this are because of the fact that the maps are slightly too small for the game's scale IMO. I disagree about overpowered vehicles, I never found them overpowered. Same about some units being too hard for you to kill, they probably have a unit that counters them somewhere on your army.

I am the opposite to you though as I never really got into Starcraft (Probably because it's too fast paced.). In fact, I'll even say that DoW 1 + all expansions is probably my favourite RTS of all time (Narrowly beating the first Supreme Commander and Age of Empires 2.). I find it really fun and I'm looking forward to the upcoming DoW 3.

Elmofongo: snip.
I never really found those issues were too bad. Managing groups can be a bit annoying because of speed differences, I kept all unit types in their own grouping so I could manage it better.

I find the Warhammer RTS games and Blizzard RTS games so different it's hard to compare them fairly. Blizzard RTS games are so fast and twitchy, relying on optimal build orders, fast micro-management and expendable swarms of units, while Warhammer is slower and more tactical on the unit level. Both good in their own ways.
Soulstorm is the worst. Play all the other ones but not soulstorm.

Why is Soulstorm so bad?

I only play it for the Skirmishes since it has the most factions and I installed the Tyrannids and Daemons of Chaos faction mod.

I only play the campaigns of the Original and Winter Soldier, I can care less about the Risk style campaign of Dark Crusade and Soulstorm.

Unless you mod it it's awful. It's half finished and buggy. Try playing Dark crusade after playng Soulstorm and you'll notice the difference.
