Crosmando: Honestly when I first saw GOG I thought it was a piracy download site.
I have a superior who still thinks that. We've had our fair share of game developers who thought the same. It boggles the mind.
They can't have my number. I'm already dating GoG with Blizzard on the side.

Shadowstalker16: Just partaking in this piece of history before its locked.

It got much worse than this.

You, reading this in the future, it wasn't too good at this point of 2022, hope you're in a better reality.
Yeah, they started asking for your real name and address. Apparently it's because of US tax laws, but thing is that they ask Europeans that too, who obviously don't follow US tax laws.
I'd understand it if it were for credit card purchases, but with steam wallet? Really?

Oh, and to top it off, Steam suffered from some data breaches in the past.

Been like this on Steam since I first went there 2014.
It's optional though. I always fill in "not required" in those datamining fields when buying something there. It has never been a problem.
Just give them a fake number.

Pax-Christi: I think if Valve cared so much about Linux and "open source", they should 'open source' the Steam client so that all the shady telemetry could be removed.
The only way this would happen is if a third party (some group of motivated individuals) reverse-engineered the functional suite of the client.

The reason the client is NOT open-source is fundamentally so that the proprietor (Steam) can control who has and how they access its assets.

Telemetry is essential for these Web 2 businesses; without it they'd be like television broadcasters in the 70s, relying on the public to fill in handwritten checklist surveys of what they watched the night before … so not very accurate nor very reliable, especially compared with realtime analytics. (Steam would probably sue the third party, too, for damaging their proprietary authority, or some such.)
Didnt this phone number thing happened like 6 years ago.
See, everyone, don't be despondent. Valve wants your number :-)
I think this is for your own safety, as well as to reduce the number of cheaters in the game.

Trooper1270: What game ?...
The one you lost just now.
Valve?

Sounds like a nice way of referring to a sphincter, to me.

Maybe, but I have yet to work out which one it was...

I was mainly trying to prompt a spammer/bot into a response, but not sure if it worked...

It's just an old joke about a game where the objective is to not think of the game, hence being reminded of it is an automatic loss.
