Hey, just curious if every game added to the preservation program lets previous owners get the upgrade for free. I'm seeing that Ultima I + II + III is in the preservation program, but when I check my library each one is a separate game and doesn't add up to the filesize in the preservation program edition. Likewise, the changelogs don't show any new updates. I heard that people who owned Silent Hill 4 got a free upgrade, but do the other games in the program get free upgrades too or nah?

Nearly all of the changes are simply tweaks to ensure compatability with modern version of windows and there is no charge.

You can select newer/older versions when using Galaxy. Offline installers without galaxy are limited to whichever version you last downloaded or manually keep backed up.

All updates are free. But plenty of games introduced in the program are just tested to work on Win 10 and 11, so there are no changes. And in case of the early Ultimas, the only one that actually was updated was Ultima 2.

Not sure, I understand you correctly, but weren't the "Ultima" games sold as bundles at some point ("Ultima 1+2+3" and "Ultima 4+5+6) and only got unbundled later?

I have eight entries in my downloaded games for the first six "Ultima" games:
Ultima 1+2+3
Ultima 4+5+6
Ultima 1
Ultima 2
Ultima 3
Ultima 4
Ultima 5
Ultima 6

The last updates for the two "Ultima Trilogies", that I've downloaded, are from 2014.
While the separated games latest updates are from 2024 and 2025.

Yes, you get the “preservation program” updates available to you for free, it’s just that the games in your library are separate titles and not in a bundle like they are sold. It’s this way so if you want to play only, say, Ultima 2, you don’t have to download all three games just to play that one.

As for the changelogs, sometimes GOG doesn’t update them, but you can always check the GOGdb and see when the latest build was uploaded (for instance, Ultima 2 was updated on 2025-02-13.)

Also, sometimes the games themselves don't get build updates being part of the preservation program. GOG simply ensures that everything about the games works as intended, and only updates if they need to fix or improve something.

Yes, all the games sold in bundles (Ultima 1+2+3, Tomb Raider 1+2+3, Quest for Glory 1-5, etc.) used to also be bundled in your library and download as a bundle, but back in 2015 went through a great unbundling so they are now all separate entries and downloads in your library, even though they are still sold as bundles.

Thank you all so much! I guess I thought that the GOG Preservation Program was like Nightdive Studios' remasters where the old game gets put into a new 64-bit engine (with an updated EXE file for DOS/16-bit games), but I suppose as long as it works on modern systems then that's not needed.

Yeah, no. That would require a modicum of effort. GOG couldn't even be bothered to give an upgrade to the latest Dosbox built for modern systems, showing the Preserves Programme to not even reach the level of effort required by Kimchi or Kombucha.
