Soulreaver was suppose to be a longer game, but they split it. Making it a single experience and game would let them add in things they originally had to take out and might not be present in SR2.
They should properly compress it to a few games, removing excessive backtracking and reused puzzles, expecially for the last titles.

And ignoring repeats of puzzles unless you had to. Though it would be more fun if you came across an already-solved puzzle, only to go back later in the past and then have to solve it...

I just backed up the game today and then I find this topic lol. Maybe I should keep it just in case the "updated" version has issues. Guess this means I'm gonna keep 2 copies once it comes out. At least the game files are small.
Oh wow, it just occured to me that maybe I should make a backup of the Linux files in case I ever switched. And here I thought I'd knocked out at least 1/3 of my games, only to realize I have 5/3 to go.
Been using Windows for so long, I wonder if it's even worth backing up the Linux versions. Sigh.

So, any new info or can we just assume Soul Reaver is never coming back? Been almost a year and a half at this point for this "check back soon" notice :/

This is GOG after all, so it should be read as a "check back soon™" notice ;).
Considering other d3d7-based games such as HoMM IV have gotten the GOG wrapper treatment as of late (to bump them to d3d9 for better compatibility), I'd say some progress has been made. Though Soul Reaver's use of d3d7 most likely is more complex than what HoMM IV was doing.

Now that the Legacy of Kain series has been sold to Embracer, things have become more complicated. I don't think we'll see Soul Reaver before CDE Entertainment (the new division of Embracer) assumes publishing of the former Square Enix games.
