It's an action-RPG, because of the whole leveling and skill-tree stuff, with hack&slash being the central gameplay element.
It may be simplistic, but it's still in a sub-genre of RPGs.

Leroux: Lionheart appearing in that list would have been my least complaint. There's a glaring lack of Planescape: Torment, not even Baldur's Gate 2 is present, no Ultima VII, and they put Shadowrun Returns before Dragonfall Director's Cut. Funnily enough, no Witcher game in the top 10 either. Then again, it doesn't say "best" or "most popular RPGs" anywhere, just "top 10", and that could be anything, e.g. "Top 10 RPGs We Need to Sell More Copies of". ;)
This is mostly due to tecnical limitations. These Top Tens are simply linking to a GoG game search. In this case, it links to a search for:

sith lords|shadowrun returns|nox|anachronox|neverwinter diamond|arcanum|darklands|divinity developer's|lionheart|torchlight

But a search for "Ultima 7", it would also give "ULTIMAte Body Blows", "ULTIMAte Doom", "Ultima Underworld 1+2" ..

This is why there's no Ultima in top ten, nor any other game that gives gives multiple results when you search for it.

that's an Hack&Slash... action-RPG it's just a cool way to call hack&slash (no, just kidding).

anyway, a real action-RPG is the witcher 1. Diablo-like games are hack&slash skill-tree and level don't make a game a RPG.

Ah, so it's actually "Top 10 RPGs With Names Compatible to Our Broken Database Search and/or Dubious Naming Practices"? ;)

Not a good excuse to exclude "dragonfall" and "torment", though. Those only give one result.

Anyway, reading some of the thread posts here, I guess we were lucky that they didn't name it "10 real RPGs". Man, I'm so sick of that futile discussion. :P

you can actually build the dps character. vanguard? i checky one moment. vanquisher. you can actually build the vanquisher kind of sorcy. and I think this was intentional given the connection to Diablo 2 and the sorceress there. some of the vanquisher armour looks awful magic-y. the highest level arrow hail spell looks just like a sorc AoE and then throughout the skill tree you have spells which, when looked at from a mage perspective, look like they're covering the bases of your typical magic-type repertoire. your firef/frost inferno spell, your bread&butter ranged missle spell, your dot.

so Torchlight qualifies as an rpg. my first run trough on Torchlight was with a hybrid Alchemist that was part summoner part mage.

RPG are games with some role play, like D&D games, the witcher 1, with good story line, with choose and consequence.
Hack&Slash are games with lot's of loot, usually with a side story line, lot's of dungeon where you can loot a lot.

Torchlight it's a good hack&slash... I don't know why hack&slash (and other genre, like action, fps etc...) fan try to turn every game in a RPG

In Torchlight you play the role of a person that likes to hack, slash and loot...

Yes, and in Mario, you play the role of a common joe saving his cosplay-loving girlfriend. Role and story. There's choices & consequences aplenty - which world order, take the powerup or not, try to collect all the coins or not, play as a pacifist or murder everything...damn, every time you press a key, it's a choice with consequences :)

And now, for a slightly less ludicrous way of getting the point across: an article about why it's hard to define what the hell is a RPG.
I think that the purpose of those boxes is mostly to expose the frontpage GOG audience to less exposed but good games, such as lionheart or Returns, so not Planescape and other classics that sell extremely well anyway...

I think of rpgs as games where you choose who to be, and who you choose to be changes the game. and also usually there's wizards. and wicked magic swords and girls with their titties out everywhere but in a sort of gilded classy way.

Torchlight has all of that so I think it's an rpg.
