Well it's official... I am too dumb to play GalCiv.

Yeah, that was it. I went through the turns and the colony ship from earth did go there.... but once it got there it wasn't allowed to enter it because there were no habitable planets. I could've sworn a couple of times when I first encountered this my ship from earth did reach it and colonized it... but maybe I sent it to a different sun.

Oh well, at least that's answered. (I think). Still about a gazillion questions that the manual just does NOT cover. And even though I've got the tutorial box checked as on, I'm not seeing anything that looks like a tutorial. There is so much inside this game... and so little guidance on how to use it. So frustrating.

After having had a quick look at what GalCiv 1 offers, I am sticking to GalCiv 2, thank you. Sorry YoungFitGuy but not taking you up on your nice offer to learn the game so I could help you better.

Makes me wonder why on Czredhoo you play that one and not one of the later versions.

aspen28570: Dumb question but is there any habitable planets in the sun?
avatar
OldFatGuy: Well I assume so, they were yellow. How can I tell before I get there? Will clicking on it do something?? (right clicking on it doesn't because I right clicked on it about a gazillion times trying to send my colony ship there lol).

Geez though. maybe that's it. I'm just assuming that because they're yellow they have habitable planets and maybe they didn't.

THANK YOU. I'm hoping that explains it. Sure is the best explanation so far. lol

Wait... except twice (IIRC) the colony ship from earth DID reach it and did colonize it. So thats not it.

ADDED: You know what, I just went back into the game left clicked on the sun in this particular game and it doesn't list any planets. Maybe I'm getting confused on where I was sending my colony ship from earth and maybe this was the issue all of those times. I dunno, I swear I remember the earth one reaching one the "explorer" one wasn't allowed to get into. I'm going to start a new game and try to be careful on where I send the colony ship from earth and verify if it indeed does colonize a star when the colony ship already out exploring isn't allowed to. I might've mixed up my suns or something.

But even in this game I just loaded up, the "explorer" colony ship doesn't do anything when I right click on that sun. But when I right click on it with the colony ship from earth, it "registers" the click and blue circle appears there.

Oh duh, I know.... I'll go back into that game and just advance the necessary number of turns to see if it allows the one from earth to go there.
You can send your colony ship into stars that have planets in them. When you left click on a star you will get a list of planets (if any) on the right side of the screen, to colonize move your colony ship to a star that has planets (the color of the star don't really matter i think), when the colony ship gets to the star, you'll get a dialog for the first time you colonize in the current game and the planet viewer will appear and allow you to select which planet you want to colonize. (just a tip there is a number next to the planet in the planet viewer the higher the better).

In each new game the map is randomly generated so no two games are exactly the same.

Wasn't there something like a range limit? I could be wrong but I think ships have range depending on fuel, engine or something similar. It's a long while since I played that game the last time.

Edit:
Just saw aspen28570 posts. That looks more like the correct answer.

Unless he's trying to colonize a planet on the other side of the map that shouldn't be a problem.
Ah, I remember getting GalCiv 1 over Impulse. I think it was free or extremely cheap for a while when I got it.

I had a lot of fun with it even though I had never played any game on the style before (and I think I already owned Master of Orion 1 and 2 over gog, I simply hadn't played them). But it's been so long that I don't recall the difficulties I had when first playing it.

Eventually, I got GalCiv 2 over there as well.

I never thought of them as complicated games, but was quite impressed over the difference when I finally played MoO2.
I'm too dumb and more importantly too impatient to play any 4X games. Way too much micromanagement, way too many boring things to take care of. Anything with economy more complex than Heroes of Might & Magic is likely to have me bored before I even learn to play it properly.

I was trying to make your post fit into some sort of stable meter ;_; Took me a good half minute of wondering why you were waxing poetic. Ah well. Some days are slow.
Game is now claimed. Now I hope that new player can come back here and teach me to play it.
The description of this game sounds like the kind of strategy game I wouldn't enjoy: you are supposed to replay the game over and over again, first with low difficulty levels, then if you are able to beat the game with it, try a tad higher difficulty...

Frack all that. I want to play the game once (hopefully with the highest difficulty) and then say at the end "There, now I've won this game, next game...". That's how I played e.g. Fallout Tactics, beating it once (in the highest difficulty even), and now I feel I'm done with the game.

To me it appears GalCiv (and other 4x strategy games, MOO, MOM, Civ???) are like playing chess against the computer, maybe changing how bright you want the computer to be, and how big the chess board is be and with how many pieces. Hey, let's play chess where the computer AI is calculating million moves ahead, on a 1000x1000 chess board with 4000 pieces! A real challenge!

I don't like skirmish games in e.g. Starcraft either, I want to play only a campaign.
Off topic , but has anyone played Star Ruler 2 ? Is it harder than GalCiv I-III ?
