amok: which would have been a good point, if we ignore the fact that this time it is not Sqeenix, but Realtech VR ....
avatar
ReynardFox: Squeenix owns Tomb Raider does it not? Wouldn't they be licensing it to Realtech and dictating the usage?
it completely depends on how it is monetized. in everything here, though, squeenix have not yet been mentioned. not to mention that they do have all these games on gOg, as well as dropping the odd DRM free game here now and then (the last one 5 days ago).

SpecShadow: and a number of DLC packs
back then they were called expansion packs.
[...]
yes, because back then they where delivered on disks. These days they are online, hence the name DownLodable Content....

Whether or not these remasters are worth anything depends on the controls. It says support for 360 controller, but how good/intuitive will those controls be? I've stayed away from classic TR games because of the classic controls.

Based on what's seen of Laura's movement in the videos, I think I'll keep staying away.

This is a PC forum and thus we're supposed to pretend all DLC is evil. Keep up! ;)

Breja: Tangentially related - any idea why is TR: Underworld not here?
avatar
tinyE: Same reason we don't have Legend or Anniversary I guess.

Honestly, while beautiful, I think Underworld is the worst in the series, not counting AOD of course which is a buggy mess.
I also thought Underworld was much weaker than Legend and Anniversary, but still kinda ok. How do you feel about TR:Chronicles? I never finished it but the first 2 or so levels left a really bad impression on me. Very 'meh'.

I didn't like the episodic way Chronicles were put together, every level being a different time and event. It was obviously kind of rushed out and I always considered it a DLC/Expansion for #4.

Underworld was INCREDIBLY beautiful, but I couldn't help but feel that all the ruins started to look exactly the same. That killed it for me. That's why I always felt #2 was the best in the series. EVERY area looks and feels different, but of course, it's still the same story, unlike Chronicles. IMHO an absolute masterpiece.

Nice, the only of the pre-reboot ones that I actually managed to finish, and it was supposedly the best! :)

goldfishfingers: Realtech has made remasters that require the DOS version of each game on steam.
Good luck with TR 2&3 then, since they've always been Windows-only. =P Seriously though, how can anyone make ports of games and not know what their original versions were?
avatar
Leroux: From the quotations in the OP:

The port is relying on Steam because we won’t provide game data. Since TR classic is on Steam, we will use the game data from there.
So that should essentially make them the same as GOG because as far as I recall Squenix simply repackaged the GOG versions for their Steam releases.

To be honest I wouldn't call these remasters as they just look like the original versions running under a wrapper such as Glide. Don't get me wrong, I have fond memories of my childhood playing TR2 and the graphics are good to me, but calling them remasters seems a bit of a stretch.

By the way, I'm quite afraid of the words "mobile port" and "DLC". I'll have to wait and see though...

Anniversary is still my favorite by far - I was kind of underwhelmed by Legends and Underworld - which kind of makes sense since it drastically improved on TR1 which is also my favorite of the originals. I did enjoy the re-reboots but I still can't take the whole "I'm vulnerable & emotional"/"Now I'm action Rambo" disparity in those games very seriously.

I should play Angel of Darkness from my backlog finally. I've tried it briefly and it seemed fine. It's the only TR game I haven't completed.

Angel is VERY rushed. There is actually a cut scene where her outfit keeps changing, obviously spliced together from other scenes at the last minute to fill in the narrative. Also they added this bizarre RPG element where you need to do certain things to improve strength and speed in order to accomplish other things. Problem is, it's never clear what those things are and they are easy to miss so you may find yourself later in the game unable to make a jump because you missed something before.

Oh yes I love TR2, it's the first one I bought for myself, but god damn I got seriously stuck on several levels. The damned Opera House and that underwater ship in particular :P
TR3 is also great wrt level variety, though not nearly as much so as TR2. Unfortunately in TR3 I just hated some of the levels: the starting India levels were a drag and the Area 51 levels (the facility itself, not the cool desert levels leading up to it) were just plain horrible.
I just hope they won't remove the originals and then add the new versions at 30$ without goodies, as someone else did..

Or maybe change Lara because nowadays her body could offend some people..

I never beat the game because I didn't realize there was an insect boss towards the end that had to be targeted a special way (using the End key). But I have real nostalgia for the game, since it was like the second title (the first being Doom 3) I played when I got my first custom-built computer back in '04 (one of the happiest periods of my life), but I'm sure the flaws would be glaring if I revisited it. I couldn't bring myself to re-play all the way through TR3 even with cheat codes.

See I don't remember that because my happiness and Lara's tiddies distracted me I guess.

I didn't even get to those parts because the tutorial was so awful already I could barely suffer through it. From what I recall it actually freezes your character in place while making you listen to the tutorial intructions. "Please don't move a muscle while we explain to you in detail how you have to use the jump button to jump. After you have patiently listend to our instructions you can try it out once for yourself, but please don't do anything else but press the jump button." Arrrgh. I wonder, how did I ever figure out how to jump by using the jump button in TR1-5, without these helpful tutorial instructions? XD
