Very few people know, but the last year I've been working on porting Birth of the Empires (formerly known Birth of the Federation 2) to Android. If you want to try it look up Birth of the Empires on Google Play or click here
It can be played on phones also, but some texts might appear too small.

The game is free and open source and it runs on both Linux and Windows beside Android, but the PC versions need a bit more love...
And of course for the PC there always is the original Birth of the Empires here which unfortunately doesn't gets much development lately nor does it release regularly.
Any feedback will be appreciated. Thanks!

For those who can't access Google Play, you can get the game from Amazon.

For those who want to play on their desktops (savegames are compatible!) get it on itch.io. Android version is also available there for those who can't get it from Amazon or Google Play.

To change resolution on the PC run with: --res=1280x720

So no-one likes 4x TBS games?

Give it time. There are plenty of TBS/4X fans here, just not all that many avid mobile/tablet gamers.

For my part, I'll try and give it a go at some point, although I have a bit of a weak-assed tablet that can't do very much at all.

Well, performance should be pretty ok on any kind of Tablet. And if turns take too long to calculate then you can always try a smaller galaxy. Galaxy size is customizable between 100 and 1600 systems on android.

And I hate most Tablet/phone games, this is why I ported this game. It's almost like on the PC and should work fine on any 5.5" screen and upwards. Though for a better experience a 7" tablet is recommended.

Now most of the single player part is done, and the first alpha is on Google Play. If you want to try it then please join the bote-android google group and then visit this.
Isn't there a way to test the game without joining any groups? It's a big deterrent for me.
Anyhow, searched for a group called bote-android under Google groups and got "No results found".
Would this work on a Kindle Fire HDX 8.9" (Fire OS is not exactly Android)?

If you have access to google play from the Kindle Fire then it should work. I can always provide a separate APK for those who can't use Google play, but the autoupdater is really a nice feature.
As for testing from Google play without joining the group: unfortunately Google doesn't lets me add alpha/beta testers which aren't in some group... I have no clue why.. I didn't wanted to make the game public yet as I would like to work out any game-breaking bugs before a public release. And I plan on optimizing savegames at some point which will break old savegames... But for the next couple of weeks I'll focus solely on bugs.

Seems quite nice :)
How are you in terms of development? Are you a one man crew or a team, can you use assistance in any area, etc? :)

I am a one man crew... Right now I'm ok, but some of the artwork needs a bit of rework I think and possibly the fonts. Since most of the assets are borrowed (with permission of course) from the PC version, I have 99% of the things I need. But suggestions are always welcome and I will see what I can do. Btw. the sources are here. The license is the same as for the original, the guys haven't updated it to GPL unfortunately.

You can try but the assets are downloaded automatically from Google (but updates will be in the 9MB range), so if that doesn't works then here is a [url=https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4EHyHgXdsckNjA0a2c0M0RqZXM/view?usp=sharing]Google-free version (which is about 250MB and if something changes it has to be downloaded again entirely). Keep in mind that updates are easier to deliver through the Google Store (and assets don't have to downloaded again if they haven't changed), which is not the case from my Google drive.

Thanks. I'll try to find some time for it.
Kindle Fire uses Amazon Kindle Store, which is a subset of Google Play, although one can access and install from Google Play too (but this is disabled by default, I believe).

A let's play video would be nice though, and a short gameplay video, but for that you'd have to know the game a bit. Btw, short tutorial (clicking on a sector where the green rectangle is makes it red - switches to ship view). To move ships tap on a new sector in range twice (once to move the rectangle there and once to confirm the order). Double-click in menus to add building for example to the queue. Long press deletes empire messages, left fling and right fling (up and down also) cycles between owned systems.

Ok, it would be nice to find out if it works or not, so please do. Also I'm not sure if non-GooglePlay apk's can be installed on non-rooted devices... So that also has to be kept in mind.
Btw, it looks like you might have to do this. Then you'll most likely need the larger APK from my google drive.

Btw if there are tech savvy Apple users here who'd want to help me release on the Apple Store also, I wouldn't mind, but right now I've never even built the thing for apple so I have no clue if it works or not.

Nice to hear about someone doing real 4X strategy on a tablet. I will try tonight. Can offer a Lollipop tablet for testing.

Same for me. Cannot join a group that I cannot find. A link to the joining page would be nice.

Sorry about that, updated OP. The group is not public so the link has to be shared

Bumping this
Ooh, I've been looking for a decent Android 4X for a while. Not that I'm any good at 4X games, but I'm always willing to try and fail miserably. Especially if it's Star Trek related, even if it has had the serial numbers filed off.
