Raven's Cry just came out, and it got me thinking about how we really don't have enough pirate games. I heard good things about Age of Pirates and the Pirates of the Caribbean game made by Akella, which would you recommend to a newcomer to the series? And do you know any other good games about pirates around?

P.S.: I have tried Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, in the end it felt like another Assassin's Creed game, and I got burnt out on those several iterations prior to that.
Sea Dogs was great. Buggy, but great. Excellent gameplay and soundtrack. POTC is better graphically but it's pretty nerfed. There's a big overhaul mod that's out there that's pretty popular, I highly recommend it if you go for POTC.

There's also the remake of Pirates! It's pretty good as well. Personally, I'd suggest tracking down Sea Dogs if you can find it and don't mind fairly antiquated graphics.
Yes, Sea Dogs 2 is very pirate-y. Mine is actually called generic Pirates of the Caribbean, but it's Sea Dogs 2 by Bethesda. Better graphics than Sea Dogs 1.

I had a lot of fun firing cannons from the deck of my ship and capturing better ships off other pirates. Reminds me I should finish it.
Spaz can be rather piratey... since you can attack anyone at any time, steal resources, intel, crew, etc. (With the exception if they are allies)
LOL for some seconds, I thought the topic subject was "Tips for pirating games. Mainly Akella ones perhaps." :)

I actually read it that way too, but sometimes mis-reading something brings out the best in everyone (or worst)

POTC = Pirates of the Caribbean, oh right, duh me.

Still, it's not exactly easy to find for new people with the generic name Pirates of the Caribbean mixed in with the other 70 movie games. Worthwhile to point out that one of the Pirates of the Caribbean games is actually Sea Dogs 2.
Anyone else remember the pirate game called Cutthroat Terror On The High Seas? The OP should also check that game out to see if it can satisfy his need to be a digital pirate. There is also Corsairs Gold. There is also -> http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/elder-scrolls-adventures-redguard There is also Risen 2 Dark Waters and Two Worlds II - Pirates of the Flying Fortress.

If we are talking about space pirates, FTL and EVE Online are options too. :)

Sid Meier's Pirates! seems like a pretty logical starting point. The 2004 remake is probably the more palatable version for most people given the choice, but it is unfortunately only currently available on Steam or GamersGate with Securom DRM.

DaCostaBR:
I absolutely love Sea Dogs 2 (Pirates of the Caribbean) - it's the pinnacle (ha ha) of pirate games for me.

I waited ages for the later Sea Dogs games to show up here, as I had never played them and immediately picked up the one that showed up most recently (Caribbean Tales I think is the subtitle?). It was... a bit hollow compared to what I remember of POTC. A bit "samey" and the ease of acquiring officers with huge max stat boosts sort of ruined any sense of progression.

Plus it lacked some of the fun bits that made POTC so great (stumbling on a treasure map, finding the island it referenced and exploring it on foot to find said treasure is a small but FANTASTIC touch).

I'd say either hold out for the *other* new Sea Dogs game to release here (maybe it addresses some of my complaints of CT?) or if you're inclined track down a copy of Sea Dogs 2 / POTC.

So, one good turn deserves another - details on this Raven's Cry! I'm always up for an open world pirate RPG - especially if it involves leveling officers, on foot AND on ship exploration / stat building.

Thank you very much for answering, I've since played the POTC game and quite enjoyed it, but I'll take another look at the latest Sea Dogs.

Still, this was another necro thread by Tauto, to anyone interested in posting please ignore it and let it fade into obscurity.

Yes, but don't dare accuse him of doing that. He'll get very irate, scream random obscenities at you and then skip off to do it to another old thread without a second thought.
Son of a ... errrr.

Sorry - the funny part - I was even excited that you were on and would get to see my post - never bothered to check the date.

Actually, I'm very happy this thread was resurrected since I forgot about these games and would like to play a good pirate game one day! :)
Also Blood & Gold: Caribbean! is supposedly a good pirate game, and I found out about a pirate game called Tempest on Steam. I haven't tried any of those though.

Tempest is a pirate game?

Any idea if it's the same one SCPM "found" and mentioned in the Unofficially Confirmed thread?

*edit Nevermind, looks like it is the same one. I'll leave this alone now LOL
