Dear All,

For a few years I enjoyed playing old DOS games using MUNT Roland MT-32 emulation for superb music (especially Kyrandia trilogy). It works perfect in DOSBox and ScummVM shells.

Now I want to emulate Roland Sound Canvas-55 with TiMidity++

But no matter what I do, I just can't find / install available driver [filename timiditydrv.dll] for Win7 (64bit).

Adding new hardware in Control Panel by means of supplement .inf file doesn't help: it says something about not compatible with x64 processor.

Trying to put .dll file into C:/Windows/System32 and then running in command prompt regsrv32 timiditydrv.dll changes nothing: it mentions successful installation, however no addtional MIDI devices (namely Timidity) are present.

Does the working TiMidity driver for Win7 64 even exists?!

Windows 7 has a decent midi output from my understanding, so if you replace the soundfonts it should sound fairly decent...

As for Timidity++, i've only used it on 32bit XP, which sounded awesome.

I'm trying to remember, one of the programs might have just been a server you run in the background with then generates a virtual device....

edit:
Alright found another external forums that might be more useful...

Hi rtcvb32,
Thank you for reply.

Yes, Windows 7 might have a decent MIDI output (not in my opinion though),

This is about running old DOS games under DOSBox: namely to run setup and change MIDI output to Sound Canvas in DOS, which might be difficult with defaul MS Wavetable Synth.

Check here: http://gmsynths.blogspot.ru/ - it says "Now, years later, with newer Windows operating systems like Windows 7 and Windows 8, the same M$ Synth is still used. They did not bother to ever properly update it. Even though Roland released newer versions of the VSC, Windows still uses the horrendous M$ Synth from 1996."

Anyway, I wonder how to replace soundfonts in Windows 7 for default MIDI.

And as for the link you gave me, that's a good one. I checked it twice before posting here. I doesn't explain how to add TiMidity driver, only how to play MIDI files and render them to WAVes.

Attached are examples of what I have and what I need.

Well i've found another midi software you might use...

http://coolsoft.altervista.org/en/virtualmidisynth

Hmmm... There's a Japaneese newer build of Timidity++

http://jaist.dl.sourceforge.jp/twsynth/36408/TiMidity-CVS081206_setup_ENG.exe

Although... One of the instructions it says you need to restart your computer for the drivers to take effect... Try it?

anyways i'll try to get timidity++ to work, but i have stuff going so i can't just reboot my computer til it's done...

Sorry for not mentioning it earlier, Japanese version was tried 3 times before posting here (your file exacly). On some forum I found that it should be executed with Admin rights, which I also did. Restarted PC every time (almost 10 times already), and it just doesn't appear as my additional MIDI output device. Don't know why:((

Thanks for VirtualMIDISynth though, I'll give it a shot!

Hmmm curiously my last post didn't go through...

I found this interesting tidbit...

http://www.sierrahelp.com/Utilities/SoundUtilities/PutzlowitschsVistaMIDI_Mapper.html
Microsoft has removed access to the MIDI Mapper in the Control Panel Sound applet. When no MIDI Out device has been assigned, WIndows defaults to the "Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth" synthesizer.
Meaning the mapper was removed which is why we can't find it.

on the page it lists a 50k file that forcibly opens it. letting you set your midi mapper.

Thanks again. Actually in my first reply to you I attached screens from this very MIDI mapper. It's a good app which is present here, much easier to check MIDI devices than running DOSBox mixer /listmidi command.

As for the VirtualMIDISynth - it works! I run a few games with Sound Canvas using unofficial SC-55 soundfonts and music sound so much better than MT-32 emulation :)))))

The only curious thing is that it addressed itself as MIDI device = 0, and when I'm trying to change device in DOSBox to other, it still manages to emulate Sound Canvas. Looks like it just overlaps its soundfonts above all else.

Still it solved my problem, thanks again!!!
Using the Timidity++ drivers i can't tell if it's even working, which is too bad :( It was slightly glitchy of when soundfonts got changed in XP but wasn't bad...

But i'm trying out the CoolSoft VirtualMidiSynth drivers and i can hear when they change over, so that's good :)

If you need small halfway decent soundfonts, the Merlin will do you, otherwise i'm trying out a recommended SGM soundfonts which sound good... All of this is better than what windows comes with.

link, SGM is in 5 30Mb parts, don't need sfArk to use it.

edit: Also to note, the installer for CoolSoft complains i don't have SP1, but i forced the install and it seems to be working fine... So just a note.

Man, you rock!

Sound Blaster Audigy soundfonts are great. I'm currently collecting more and more quazi (fake) Sound Canvas-55/88 soundfonts. Let me know if you're interested.

A few years ago i remember downloading like 2 Gigs of soundfonts, professional and other sets... i don't think i ever used them at all... Although i do remember that the Megaman MegaMix sounded fantastic...

No i don't think i'll be needing help finding soundfonts too much though. I hope you have everything you need for midi-playback.
I think i found a better general purpose collection here (sfArk needed to decompress), which i'm liking a little more than the Merlin soundfonts, or the 200Mb SGM.

edit: Although listening from the Timidity++ player vs the one we currently have installed, Timidity++ does a better job overall... Oh well.
