Hey guys. So I've been playing a bit of Timeshift and a bit Singularity. These game both a few things in common. They both got released on GOG around the same time. They're both expensive for what they are. neither of them have an original bone in their body.

However I found myself like timeshift more and more and subsequently liking Singularity less and less. Despite timeshift taking inspiration form just about everything I've just been having so much fun playing it. The shooting is fun the AI is scary smart at times. The time powers are gimmicky but are always fun to use.

With Singularity the whole game just feels really slow and mundane and the combat just feels so MEH to me. I think it's the sound design that really hurts it. Guns feel like toys and the time manipulation powers just don't seem to do much in combat. There's also not a lot of combat in the game.

I'm sure this will be an unpopular opinion but Timeshift is already becoming one of my favorite first person shooters. It seems to be self aware and not really care that much. The story takes a complete backseat so you can get strait to the action with very little getting the way.

Does anyone else feel this way?
I like Singularity more, but that's probably because I enjoy the story more.
Also I haven't played TimeShift as much.
Still, I would probably never consider either one of my favorite FPS'.
I remember Singularity had an interesting story especially after you realize the whole of it at the end but TimeShift's time manipulation abilities were more interesting, I liked those even if the energy to use them was depleted too fast.

They should probably have skipped the shooting altogether and just focused on the time travel part, both in gameplay and stories.
I still have Timeshift demo from some magazine and never played Singularity.
So I vote for Timeshift > Singularity

So the story is the main reason people got into Singularity
That's not saying much. A lot of games > Singularity. It's a very run-of-the mill game.

I'm not sure but I couldn't imagine playing games like these for the shooting/combat part. It's either the story/narrative, atmosphere of playing in that setting or enjoying the gimmicks.

What are "games like these"? FPS? I haven't played either game, hence I am asking.

If I think of FPS games, Serious Sam games have place in my heart, and I think I like them mostly due to their shooting/combat part. It is not like they are heavy on the story or anything.

Then there was Wheel of Time which was supposedly based on works of some famous fantasy books writer, but I mostly found the story quite non-sensical and uninteresting, and unfortunately the combat/shooting part was lacking (e.g. the weapons were too odd). The combat part was quite frustrating, as a matter of fact.

Not all shooters have gimmicks or stories, they are just shooters (or FPS). I guess I think these games would have been better served as a niché without the shooting, specializing on gimmicks and a narrative. There have been years since I last played either TimeShift or Singularity so I don't remember well how I enjoyed the combat but I do recall that by the time Singularity was released I was beginning to dislike shooters in general.

Serious Sam is an excellent example of plain shooters which is why I've never played them.
I appreciate them for different reasons.

I like the storytelling or concept more in Singularity, it's like a cool sci-fi horror film, something I would buy on DVD.
The gameplay too was fun, like BioShock meets Metro. For some reason I also think there's a certain adventure game feel to the game, which I like. You don't just shoot stuff, it's about finding things out.

Timeshift to me is all about the level design and combat mechanics, there's more variety in the gameplay and settings than in Singularity. However the storyline did not feel as unique to me, it was cool but not as interesting as in Singularity.

My pick: Timeshift . Since I am more likely to replay an FPS game that focuses on the action and mechanics than an FPS game that focuses more on the storyline or narrative, regardless of how good that narrative or storyline is.

On the whole I enjoy "plain" shooters like Serious Sam and Painkiller much more than story-driven FPS games like BioShock Infinite and the later Deus Ex games. If I enjoy the combat I am more likely to replay an FPS, and I feel that these plainer shooters do put more emphasis on the combat than the story-driven ones. My favourite FPS games of all time are stuff like Blood, Redneck Rampage and Red Faction.

Sometimes I forget that people play games for the story. I'm a super old gamer.

Red Faction was so much better as an FPS.
