Okay.

I don't see what good or bad about his statement. It doesn't mean anything and it's not gonna do anything. Even as a publicity stunt, the epic game store debate is so stupidly polarized it won't change anyone's opinion.

Basically, he's challenging Vavle to make an outrageously dumb financial move. Valve has absolutely nothing to gain by reducing their cut. That's will just drastically reduce their profit for zero benefit. EGS isn't a threat to Steam so there's no financial incentive to accept the challenge and kill it either.

Sweeney knows this. Doesn't matter if that's sincere or not, it's like saying i'll give someone all of my possessions if they let themselve be run over by a truck.

Darvond: Gosh, it is cute when the lies are so blatant. If Tim really cared to be competitive, he'd give a better cut without the exclusivity period. Let the market decide, rather than forcing them to take the moneky paw.

Here's the article that sources the tweets that say this nonsense.

StarChan: Thanks for notifying me (us) about this rather interesting twitter sequence. I'd say it's more a challenge than it is extortion, but I won't go into petty semantics. I am left with an impression of someone begging Steam to cave in under the pressure of Epic exclusives. Do we here see a first sign that the money Epic has poured into securing these exclusives, are not easily recouped?
It's the exclusives that are the "extortion". This is just damage control because too many of us see it for what it is.

jakandratchet: His statements are disgusting. He's also definitely bluffing. EGS is using underhanded tactics and then trying to gaslight us all into seeing them as the saviors of pc gaming.

amok: exactly what is disgusting about his statements? what do you not agree with?
The implciation of altruism. That trying to buy their way into the market space with an inferior product is somehow good and that steam is somehow making them do this.
Poor old Gabey boy would be on the poverty line if Steam had to reduce their cut to only 12%. How would the big fella eat?

A while ago he was listed as one of the 100 wealthiest people in the US. I suppose he could tap into his savings.

you can see how many stores by going to https://isthereanydeal.com/

there is the mains store (valve) but other stores can sell steam key in which valve gets no profit (see store list picture)
so yes steam is also competing against itself kinda with those 28 stores that sell steam keys which valve gets no profit

at this point those other stores kinda got smacked in the middle between epic and valve but on top of this you have there larger companies with there own clients and own games

being exclusive means out of these 20+ stores only 2 can actually sell the game

Is Sweeney any less of a greedy carnt?

If Steam calls his bluff Sweeney will just pull a Trump.
I would honestly prefer if instead of publishers/devs getting a bigger cut, that we customers got cheaper games...

Steam fanatics, that would willingly throw themselves into his mouth.

I find myself not giving an F who wins this console war. Both are shit DRM launchers.
The thread title is false. That's not extortion.

IMO Epic exclusives are a great thing, because it finally forces Steam users to feel how GOG users have felt for years when the GOG users would oftentimes be shafted by Steam exclusives.

I'll have sympathy for Steam users who rage about Epic exclusives only if & when I first see them apologize en masse for not caring about GOG users and being totally fine with Steam exclusives that shaft GOG users. As of yet, I've not seen a single person apologize for that.

I wondered the same.

Assuming he's being honest, it's at least an admission that they would rather not be in the storefront business at all.

A colorful metaphor. Both metaphorically and literally.
