"Technology was less developed for obvious reasons, and all the other advantages we have are because our technology allows us to. Do you really think that for example teenage sex would be anywhere socially accepted if we didn't have birth control?"

Socially accepted? Hell, the term "child brides" originated from something. Shorter life span? Better marry that girl who just hit puberty so she can pop out a few kids before she croaks. I'm pretty sure it was way more acceptable before technology and birth control.

I meant unmarried teenage sex; when people live shorter they also do everything else earlier.

And faster. So it should be more enjoyable for women now...

EBToriginal: The word "species" does not work like that.
avatar
JMich: Yes, usual definition of species is organisms that produce a fertile descendant, which makes Jaguars, Lions, Leopards and Tigers the same species.
The humans of two millennium ago though were sufficiently different from current ones, both in life expectancy, social behavior, scientific advances and other things, so that even though biologically we may still be the same species, culturally we may not be considered. Unsure if cultural studies use the word species though, so my usage of said word may indeed have been incorrect.
If you make it past adolescence average life expectancy 2000 years ago and today is closer than you think. And technological considerations are completely irrelevant, otherwise the handful of uncontacted tribes left on the planet would be a different species, when taxonomically speaking that's a silly idea.

Yes. As I said, I wasn't speaking biologically, but wondering if species was used in other fields as well. It seems that it isn't, so we don't have cultural species or intellectual species.
Once more, apologies for the misuse of the word.

JMich: So, how far back will I have to go? And did my family own slaves or were slaves themselves, or did the community my family lived in owned/were slaves?
Greece was occupied (for quite a bit of time) but I don't recall there being any slavery, unless we go a couple of milenia back, in which case we may be talking about a different species, depending on how you define a species.
So, which part of my family took place in slavery, and how long ago?

MarioFanaticXV: Your ancestry goes back far beyond recent memory. I can't say how far back you personally would have to go to trace it, that's something you'd have to trace your own family history to find out, for some people, it may only be a few hundred years, for others, it might be as much as a thousand years. But you have to realize that the only laws in the entire world banning slavery are no more than a few hundred years old.
Its true, we don't know the half of it. I used to think I was well informed cuz I watched da history documentreez. One has to dig a tad deeper than that ...

non-volatile information storage units (they used to call them "books") can be useful ...

some of this material might be considered contraversial by some people and please understand, the intention is certainly not to offend or upset anyone ...

if you find any of
this material offensive, it is suggested that you...

1. quit the Amazon web page,
2. take a deep breath, count to 5 and exhale (if you suffer from asthma, alergies or any other condition that might cause breathing difficulties skip this part)
3. spend some quiet time with yourself
4. re-asses your thought processes, philosophy/belief systems/values, external influences and so on that brought you to the point now where you are so easily demoralized.

For everyone else, please enjoy the interesting and enlightening info available and if facts are still a bit too LARGE & CHUNKY for you, then perhaps a novelized account of the past's hidden and fascinating stories will be easier for you to digest.

Love & Peace siblings! :-)

MarioFanaticXV: Beyond that, every single person alive has both slaves and slavers in their heritage.

JMich: I do? Damn it, which one is in my heritage. And how far back does it go?
I wouldn't know much myself, but I guess you can sum up what he is saying into:

"My dad can beat up YOUR dad!" :P

Almost never do, guess I was played
I've listened to several of the videos, and if it weren't for common sense not being so common, you'd think it would be comedy.

Although I can tell this is a necro thread from last year. Still, might as well...
