hanshan: My wishes for review system:
Sort:
- Sort reviews by; Date, Helpfulness, Stars, Length
- Sort by ascending or descending value
- Change number of reviews displayed per page.
Write:
- Keep teaser links because some customers prefer to read more and others only want a brief summary.
- But make the allowed length a LOT bigger, like amazon does, because this allows lots of helpful information about the game. Many gamers are on tight budgets so each purchase matters; also a game is an artful creative virtual world and a good description improves the odds of being happy with our purchase choice. Length allowed Now is way way way too short. Too frustrating to write an enthused description page about various unique aspects that shiw good design, and then have to character-count repeatedly tp whittle whittle whittle down. Gives up in disgust instead of turning potential buyers on.

adaliabooks: You might want to check out my script, it does all of the sorting options you want anyway :)
Cool, will do!

fr33kSh0w2012: steam and METACRITIC and I ALWAYS, ALWAYS read the negative reviews first because they are the MOST TRUTHFUL!
Careful with that... In my experience some of them are simply rants that don't do the game justice, because the reviewer was angry because the dev promised pink cows present in the game in some interview 2 years ago and implented orange bunnies instead.

I prefer to read the "mid-range" reviews (2-4), because most people writing those are more considerate, weighing the strengths and weaknesses ("Orange bunnies are not an adequate replacement for the pink cows everybody was looking to, but apart from that the game isn't bad...").

Themken: I just want to say that down voting a review because it is in a language you do not understand is rather immature.

fr33kSh0w2012: It should be in English most people in other countries have English as a second language so it's NO EXCUSE! like Mexicans and their Spanish you all know the English language and not a lot of people here know Spanish and the translators on the internet are shit so please WRITE IT IN ENGLISH for everyone whose First and only language is English!
Seriously, have you even reread what you had written? If you can't speak a second language you have no right whatsoever to ask others to do so.
I still have yet to see one of my reviews. Also my I am pretty sure my Witcher 2 review and score was deleted since I rated it low.

If that is the case why are there a bunch of low rated reviews for it?

You'd have a point if they were all 4 and 5 stars, but there are several 1 and 2 ratings in there.

You remind me of my mother. When she looks for something she looks ONE PLACE and if it's not there she screams someone stole it. :P

no it's fine. also i did another review. the first one really did disappear though.
There are two other problems with the review system (which hopefully haven't been brought up yet). They're more ideological problems rather than technical problems (ie. lack of an edit feature).

- FIRST!-ism:
The first guy to publish a review will remain on the front page for all eternity by default - unless you post in some exotic foreign tongue or the content of your review is just pure asinine garbage. It doesn't really matter how helpful your review really is, only the right timing counts. So there's a massive push to be the first one to get your review out the door and the quality suffers because of it. Which brings me to the second problem.

- Reviews from people who haven't even played the gog version:
So, you're in a situation where it's first come, first served. But wait, that game that gog released just now, I played that years ago, so let's just go ahead and write a review! Never mind that my nostalgia-goggled musings might not reflect the current state of the game at all. A prime recent example would be Bethesda's Call Of Cthulhu, which was showered with praise by people in the review section, not only for the game proper, but also for gog for having fixed all the bugs. Unfortunately, you'd have to play this COC almost all the way until the end to notice that one game-breaking bug was left in, which none of these people did. Ironically enough, the highest rated reviewer was also the one to open a thread about the game-breaking bug in the forum once he encountered it days after having posted his review. I appreciate reviewers having the honesty to point out when they have only their memories from a decade or so ago to go on, or played the game on a different system.
