People may bad mouth the hugo trilogy as a dos game, or say its simply nostalgia, but you know what having spent countless hours playing games watching reviews, I have to tell you they are better than 88% of the awful games that get green lighted on steam as for as story.
At least the hugo series are vaguely coherent but simple games that make sense. there is something to be said for that.
Dollhouse looking pacing simulators with reused, barely modified assets thrown together, and a story that makes no sense is not a good game.
All the notes they leave around, its not that they are misspelled really, its as if they written as if by an unimaginative 12 year old child, attempting to make a story as a class project.
Odd typefaces actually somehow transferred to walls, like the face of Christ on the veil of veronica. Not remotely scary, funny though in a way....typing on a wall.
Usually its not even something that's so bad its good. Nothing that could become a cult classic. That the backgrounds try to be real but look like a cardboard (shaky) dollhouse, it is horribly off putting.
I had rather a total surrender to artifice, like ms paint style. It is what it is and makes no pretensions. Its about the cute little kingsquest style story. There is something to be said for that. Its charming. The hugo series are good little games.
Hugo is a dos game, its spelled correctly, the story is coherent, in order, moving from one logical solution to the next.
The puzzles are much better than the above mentioned games.
Running around finding keys is not a puzzle.
These plastic looking things that jump out at people are not scary.
Compared to those games, hugo is a freaking masterpiece, a work of art.
Yeah they are not live kings quest 6, or gabe knight done by a major studio, but a fun-loving talented man, probably as a hobby in his spare time. They reflect the caring about the game, that he had fun making them, the feeling you get is positive...otherwise, no one would bother being nostalgic over them to be honest.
My poor friend a youtube reviewer is getting so desperate, hes saying encouraging things of one of these inde games even vaguely makes sense.
I love inde stuff mostly but someone has to try.
They have to have to be a digital artist of some type. Contrary to modern belief everyone cant be a talented musician, a writer, director or game developer. Talent is rather rare actually, even mediocre talent.
These people are embarrassing themselves and don't know it. Me and my friends actually watch there stuff sometimes even laughing to the point of tears. The games are watched for there comedic value, the reactions of people are twice as funny, so they are good for that. Yet pay money for these thing? Well one would actuality have to be tricked into it.
I don't feel the least bit bad about saying this because no love is put into it, its hacked together, and posted for 3-10 bucks to make money, probably churned out one every couple of weeks.
I am not bad mouthing devs to be sarcastic or for the sake of being a jerk, its just with the tools people have now there are no excuses for making 100's of there horrible games.
Its giving a bad name to inde games.
Like a gunslinger, a early 90's dos game is quicker on the draw, got them cold....Dead bang.
I look at these steam games, and I am like, dev, you did a bad thing, and you should feel bad....you should be ashamed. How do you sleep at night publishing this and attaching your name to it? Do you have no pride man?
Hugo, kingsquest style games, even some purely text games, truly brighten my day though. I don't give a flip when there were made, fun is fun.
