Classic lovers rejoice as we have some incredible news! Original Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord was first released in 1981 for the Apple II, and is considered one of the pioneering titles in the cRPG genre and was highly influential in shaping the role-playing game genre as a whole. Now…

The full 3D remake of that first game in the legendary Wizardry series of RPGs is available on GOG in its early access, brought by Digital Eclipse! Moreover, you can grab it with a GOG-exclusive discount of -16% that lasts until September 21st, 1 PM UTC. And if you already own Wizardry 6+7 or Wizardry 8 (or both), you can enjoy an even higher discount of -20% (lasts until September 21st, 1 PM UTC)!

The first party-based RPG video game ever released, Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord was a direct inspiration to series like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. Digital Eclipse's revival preserves the appeal of the classic, with many upgrades for modern role-playing game fans.

Prepare for a true dungeon crawling experience, where you’ll craft your own party of adventurers and head into the labyrinth at the behest of the mad overlord Trebor, in search of the amulet stolen by the evil wizard Werdna. Battle groups of challenging enemies, avoid hidden traps, and make your way deeper into the dungeon as you prepare for the ultimate battle: Facing Werdna himself.

Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord is built directly on top of the original 1981 game's code. Although it looks all new, underneath the hood is the authentic game. You can even view the original Apple II interface as you play.

Moreover, while the well-known difficulty of the enemies has not been altered, quality-of-life improvements have been added in every area. Party management, navigation, spellcasting, and combat have all been significantly enhanced.

If you're just discovering the legendary Wizardry franchise, Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord is the perfect jumping-in point for new players. And if you're a series veteran, you’ll love the gorgeous new graphics and sound, and the streamlined interface.

Tune into our stream on our Twitch Channel today (September 15th), at 9 PM UTC, where KaurTube will experience this glorious title.

A legend is reborn – grab Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord with our GOG-exclusive discount, enjoy the loyalty discount if you already own other Wizardry entries in your library, and most of all, (re)discover a game that become a hallmark of many future dungeon-crawling RPGs. Time for an adventure!

The remake doesn't include Lord or Ninja as options. Samurai is listed, but as I mentioned, you need to enable that one option to be able to create one.
The original Apple II version does not allow Lord or Ninja as starting classes. You can only reach them through character upgrades.

This really is built directly on the Apple II code. If you can't do it there, you can't do it here. We didn't change this restriction or upgrade option.

wolfsite: Actually you can create those classes at the start of the game, I've played the originals and have done it myself.
Just to clarify: This is not true of the Apple II version without the use of hacking utilities; other ports or versions may have allowed this, but the original game, which is the code running under our Unreal Engine remake, does not.

GOG.com: [...] the mad overlord Trebor, [...] the evil wizard Werdna. [...]
Ah yes, from those glory days when even professionally published games could feature middle-school-level naming creativity. :D

DoomSooth: Bought this but I'd like Ultimate Wizardry Archives, too, if you can swing it.
Agreed. It would be a really neat historical curiosity to compare to the remakes.

Gudadantza: What I`dlike to know is the state of the game to be played right now. It is Early access. Inriguing

Piranka: Kaur will check it out on stream (twitch.tv/gogcom) tonight. It's a bit late for EU people, but the VOD will stay up for at least a month afterwards. :)
Isn't it still 60 days (unless it's saved as a highlight), or did Twitch change it?

Ya that was cleared up earlier. As I stated I either had a hacked copy or was mixing it up with another version of the game as I have played 3 different versions when I was a kid.

Those names are really just the original authors' names backwards.

Wizardry 8 makes a reference to this: In one secret dungeon, there's a boss whose name is an anagram of one of the developer's names.

You also see a reference to this in Demon Lord Reincarnation.

Also, don't forget Yendor and his amulet from games like Rogue and Nethack.

...Yes, I know. That was what I was referring to.

It should be 60 days still but I decided to err on the side of caution.
To Digital Eclipse devs: I haven't bought the game (yet), so maybe I have some suggestions already implemented. But here they are (and some opinions):

1. Judging by the trailer/screenshots, I don't like the battlegrounds. They are too spacious, totally oposite to the claustrophobic oppresion of the original. I know it's not how gamers like these days, but I would prefer some abstract battles closer to the original: just a single enemy representing the group inside the corridor you were exploring.
Or, at least, make the space of battles tighter with lower ceiling and darker.

2. When toggling the Apple II overlay, it would be very elegant to have an option to remove the redundant informations on screen (I mean, the modern UI and messages, which are already present in the Apple screen).
Everything together is very chaotic and visually polluted.

3. For me, the best solution would be the ability to toggle between the modern and original game anytime, and I mean the whole screen, not an overlay.

4. Give us the option to use the original inputs (like F for fight, S for Spell etc.) and to type the name of spells and to answer questions.
Ok. Good old Wizardry indeed. Half of my party slaughtered or Paralyzed in my third fight :D. Let`s see how can I work it out a bit.
The Twitch stream has to start an hour earlier than originally planned.

New start time is 9pm UTC/11pm CEST/2pm PDT

Sorry for the inconvenience and hope to see you all there!

BreOl72: Nice!

(not the killer bunny!)

dtgreene: You're talking about vorpal bunnies, correct?
Nope.
yea, this game is being streamed on gogcom channel now, also Robert Sirotek came to visit in the chat
So how much is Sir-Tech getting from this? Just curious; seeing if Norman Sirotek, Robert Sirotek and Robert Woodhead had any sway on this.
What a surprise. Question. is this a reskin, reboot or ? . Going to actually use Twitch for once as im intrigued (loved the old games back in the day..omg i feel old now)
