ChaunceyK: *And turn-based too, with or without a party*

Feeling nostalgic, thought there might be something out there from the 80s or so that fits this description. Prefer the world to be not too big, the combat fairly simple. Traditional fantasy prefered (humans, dwarves, elves, etc, with fighters, mages, thieves, clerics, etc). Even if it's a non-PC game (such as C64 or something), I think it'd be fun to have a look at it and maybe play some old-schooly goodness.

And please don't suggest the Gold Box games. I'm looking for something a little simpler & lesser known.
Hmmm let's take 80's and replace with 90's, turn based with action, world with space, fantasy with scifi...

What you really want is Tyrian :)

TikoPiko: Doesn't Planescape: Torment fit the bill? Or is that more of an adventure?

dtgreene: Not turn based. Also, not tile based.

(Also, being an IE game, it inherits all the flaws of the IE, including the combination of bad pathfinding and being forced to rely on the bad pathfinding for basic movement.)
True. I'll show myself out. :D

karnak1: What about some WW1, lovecraftian horror, for a change?

And by the way... for those who want to know more about the history and types of RPGs you can have a look (and maybe even collaborate) inthis project.
Thanks for the CRPG Book link, a very interesting and fun read.

nightcraw1er.488: Here is a free version of heroquest out there:

Others perhaps, tales of maj'el.
Hey, that's really cool, thank you! I still have the old physical box of Hero Quest ( slightly battered ). Had no idea there's digital versions of the game. I actually wanted to make a PC game based on it at some point, many years ago, but didn't get very far with it. :P

Yes, there is quite a few versions of it, top down, or isometric. You can also get space hulk as well I think.
I always loved Hero Quest as a kid. I have all of the expansions except 1 (the Elves, forget what it was called), which always REALLY REALLY bothered me to have missed getting. They bring back a lot of warm fond memories, I might have to play them as PC games, seeing they are available. Are they single player? We always had to have a DM + couple players to play hero quest.

I also still have Battle Masters, but that wasn't as interesting of a game to me.
I'm enjoying Dark Disciples so far, but it reminded me a lot of another pseudo-roguelike demo that I played a while back. Problem is, I can't find anything on the 'Net about it. I'm nearly certain it had the name Karne (or Kharn) in it....spelling could be off, but I'm near positive it could only be pronounced (in American English) as "Karn."

Anyone recall anything about it? They looked extraordinarily similar.
