StingingVelvet: I don't notice a difference between MP3 and uncompressed, so I just use Amazon. I'm trying to give Amazon less money lately but haven't gotten around to switching yet. I don't buy a ton of music though, to be fair.
You might not notice the difference between MP3 and uncompressed, but you might, say, notice the difference between MP3 converted to OGG and uncompressed converted to OGG.

(Also, worth noting that you usually want lossless (like FLAC or ALAC) rather than uncompressed; it take about half the space with no quality loss.)

madth3: On the other side, Apple still requires to use iTunes to download your purchases.
I don't have an issue with it but some people think of that as DRM.
The way I see it, it doesn't count as DRM on the purchased music itself. However:
* There's still the issue of requiring proprietary software to do the download.
* That software might not be available for your platform. (Good luck if your main computer is something less typical like a Raspberry Pi.)
* There's also the possibility of the client itself having DRM, even if the files downloaded with it don't.

I was trying to buy an album that neither 7digital nor HDtracks would let me buy (f**k georestictions) and I found this store that allowed me to buy it in FLAC format. (It was also available as AIFF)

It requires to install and use their own download client but downloads can get quite big so it's kind of understandable and it seems the client is available for Linux and OSX

Expensive and over the top for regular music but it's another option.
Forgot to mention, but added 着信うた (dunno if it has an official name in Latin alphabet) to the list a few days back.
Nothing new, but Bandcamp is my favorite (best for supporting more obscure artists who - imo - really deserve the money), and in the past I've bought through Amazon MP3.
Someone over on Discord found a "Bleep" store, which appears to be DRM free. Checking it as I can.

There also used to be MelodySale which sold out of print albums in FLAC format.
The problem for me here in Australia, is that many sites won't sell me the albums I am interested in. They have them and sell them, but mostly only to the USA and a few other places.

It took me a few years to find good legit sources. I'd been wanting to swap to just buying digital music files for ages, but it proved to be difficult to find a good source. I am talking about full quality, so WAV or FLAC or similar. I have too many physical CDs, so needed to swap to a digital version.

As I said in an earlier post, the three for me are Bandcamp, Qobuz and ZDigital, and I primarily use Qobuz, despite them being more expensive most of the time. I will buy from the other two if I can, though ZDigital is my least favorite, despite often being cheaper.

I wish Bandcamp had more of what I like, despite their painful pricing regime, where you never know the true price until you get to PayPal ... the price often starts off real cheap and then changes two more times, each more expensive than the previous.

I've been lucky with Bandcamp a few times, where an artist I follow briefly has their latest album on Bandcamp for a short while only. So timing is everything. The only artist I follow, that has a significant presence on Bandcamp, is RODRIGO Y GABRIELA.

_Auster_: Interesting. In Apple's license agreement, they explicitly say there are DRM-free contents in their music store. Let's see how it goes further on.
The way I recall it, is that you can only get their DRM-Free lossy format, unless you subscribe to their music club and pay the annual fee, which apparently then gives you access to the DRM-Free lossless versions. At least that was touted the case at one point, but may have changed since they started a streaming service.

I never did subscribe so never found out. In fact, I have only ever bought a handful of singles and a couple of rare albums from iTunes, many years ago. I subsequently re-bought those two albums as physical CDs when I finally found a source.

The only thing I ever bought from the Apple music store was the demos and b-sides collection for mrnorth. And it only sold them in .m4a format. The band said Apple wouldn't allow them the .alac format (lossless).
I asked the band to sell it on Bandcamp instead in .flac/.wav but I never heard back from them. Then they broke up so that was that. We used to be friends a long time ago.
