Tarm: I just learned there's no way to influence battles. Highest point army always wins.
After all this time they won't add anything to their combat "engine". Well I most likely won't be buying it then. :/ Certainly not at something even near full price.

CopyPaste: The "highest point army always wins" point is not always true, you also have to take into consideration the designs of the ships and the weapons they possess as there are hard counters to some weapons. A fleet with less strength vs. a stronger one might come out on top if the ships have been designed properly against the stronger one.
Rock, paper, scissors?

Is having balanced armies feasible?

David9855: I've seen a few plays of Stellaris in action and the game looks a lot of fun. Being a Paradox game I'm a bit wary of bugs, optimization and a flood of DLC. Hope it turns out to be a great game.
I have never played a Paradox game, but now that I'm watching a Let's Play of Stellaris I'm amazed at some of the bugs they have. And then the tweaks. Take for example the Blorg multiplayer event (on Youtube) where a whole bunch of players picked red and then you couldn't tell where one empire ended and the next began. It was just one big red blob.

It feels a bit like, "Hi, we're Paradox, and we'd like to let you pay to be our beta testers."
This is how bad I am with this game:

And I'm still getting my butt kicked.

Not asking for help. Just blowing off steam.

I did quite well with my first few play throughs but booted it up a few weeks ago (when the latest patch came out) and tried something different; fanatic xenophobe pacifists.

I was doing alright thanks to all the bonuses until a neighbor invaded me (because I was xenophobe and everyone hated me) and demanded half my planets in a war I had little hope of winning.

I do plan to pick up the expansions at some point but I find the race builder a little limited, not as many options as I would like.

Otherwise a really fun game.
A thread blasted from the past!

So any news on this? I'm thinking it's been long enough since release that I might actually think it's a good buy to get it on GOG. Paradox with all them DLC's and patches and...you know. A couple of years at least is needed for their games to be worth the price they're asking.

Considering that the five-year old Crusader Kings 2 isn't here yet, I wouldn't hold my breath. And that list of DLC for a total of $262? Utterly ridiculous. $19 just for some silly portraits? No, thanks. Fucking horse armor.

Voted.

I really, REALLY, would like to see Stellaris here.
Looking at and reading about the game makes me want to play FreeOrion again. Good thing that one is free and works on Linux, Windows and OSX.
What!? This game is already out?
Well... I'll be getting it only when it comes to GOG, so I'll go back to sleep. I'm glad people like it.
Paradox has gone the "Steam only" route for their latest games so... it will be hard to see them in GOG.

And yes, the amount and pricing of DLC has reached a ridiculous point.

Makes sense, from a business point of view.

On launch, push for big money on Steam. Once product dries up, usually in a year or two, diversify distribution for extra greens.

That wouldn't be too bad, at least for me. I don't mind playing games a few years after their release, and I prefer buying complete editions instead of incomplete base game + 100 DLC.

But GOG probably wouldn't like to become the go-to second option store.
New expansion: Stellaris: Apocalypse

*sigh* And still Steam only.

The base game is over at Humble Bundle for $12:
