Hi all,

I have recently heard that some GOG games have third party DRM included in them. I have purchased games on GOG that have had Starforce DRM on them in their initial publisher release, specifically to avoid installing Starforce on my system. Can I be assured that no GOG games include any trace of the Starforce DRM?

Please and thank you.

Depends what you mean by "any trace"

If the question is : Will it install Starforce on my computer, as in the driver and registry stuff, when I install/ play the game ? then the answer is : no, it wont.

But if the question is : Is there a chance that there might an unused starforce.dll somewhere in the install folder ? then the answer is : yes it might, in the same way you have some game installs having steam dlls or even Securom ones, but they are just remnants and are not actually used. The closest we have to one being used is in FEAR IIRC where the anti-debugger code is still present in the game preventing the game to start if you have a debugger running at the same time.

I don't believe any do, but my opinion currently is that none of us can be assured GOG games are free of online requirement DRM, as, there are several games on this storefront which feature content locked behind online requirements, Hitman GOTY being the latest and a particularly egregious example.

I have asked in other topics for the staff to please assure us that if nothing else our already-purchased games would be free of receiving such "improvements" in updates. No response on that yet. I would thoroughly pore through the reviews and individual game forums on any game you are interested here, to see if anyone mentions DRM.

And yes, it is absolutely ludicrous that we have to keep tabs as a community on the level of DRMs in releases on what I thought was supposed to be a DRM-free store!

Currently there is no reported starforce infection. From memory, the multiplayer button from FEAR will install starforce, never been fixed as far as I know. Mostly the problem at the moment is online gating rather than what is traditionally called drm such as starforce, which is a bit oldschool. Online requirements with data capture is more the mainstream, moving to full on streaming online with profiling.

Securom not Starforce. And it wasn't installing Securom it was creating a couple of registry entries and installing in the game folder a couple of inert files.
