Hi everyone ! I understand that some of the games on GoG sometimes have compatibility problems with some versions of Windows. Am I the only one that the game won't launch since I updated the OS ? Is there a patch available ?

Thanks for answering !

WHAT ? you can do that ?

I don't think you can go back to Windows 8 after 10 has permanently changed and affected your pc.

That is like a girl losing her virginity to some guy and then regretting it and then trying to go back to being virgin. Not really possible.

We don't normally get along Tort but that last but there really blew my mind. +1!

I think there might be a Twilight Zone episode somewhere in there. XD

Play the far superior X-Wing Collector's CD from 1994. If your OS can run Dosbox then you can run it :)

[EDIT] Seriously http://www.usgamer.net/articles/why-the-1994-version-of-x-wing-is-better-than-the-1998-version

Here's the relevant excerpt:

1. The 1994 version is way better than 1998 version: I give all the credit in the world to Good Old Games for putting out both 1994's X-wing Collector's CD-Rom and 1998's X-wing Collector's Series; but let's face facts: X-wing Collector's Series is not a very good upgrade. In fact, it's terrible. X-wing Collector's Series' marginally better graphics—the 1998 version is based on the X-wing vs. TIE Fighter engine—comes out at the cost of much of the original's flavor. It lacks dynamic music, launch cutscenes, much of the in-game dialogue, and the (admittedly not that useful) ability to set a wingman. In place of all that, it features slightly more detailed menus from the Mac version of the game, and a Redbook audio soundtrack from the movies that plays on loop. As much as X-wing doesn't really hold up—which I'll get to in a bit—the original is just more fun.
So don't lament the fact you can't run the crappy version on your pc, rejoice you can run the best version instead!

Don't you learn from the long history of Microsoft Windows, it is better to wait a few years with the older version of windows before deciding to upgrade or not?

Anyway this show you how to roll window 10 back to window 7 /8

Yes, you can downgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 8 or 7, depending on what you had installed beforehand, assuming you upgraded to Windows 10 in the last 30 days and not earlier. If so, go to the new Settings, then Security and Update, and you should find a tab for downgrading. Because I had a clean install, I can't see it, but I know it exists on computers that took it via the upgrade. However, you'll be missing a lot if you downgrade, and why downgrade because of one old game that early? Consider downgrading a last ditch resort if the game absolutely needs to be played, but I don't recommend it myself.

Failing that, I think you can always also clean install back to Windows 8 or 7. Just make an installation media (DVD or an USB stick) with Microsoft's media creation tools, and install it using your product key.

I've done that to two different PCs already, first upgraded to Windows 10, then clean-installing Windows 7 back.

Yeah, you can also do it this way via clean installing Windows 7 or 8, but I recommend my own suggestion in case the guy used the Get Windows 10 program, and it seems like they used the program. It will restore everything back with their previous settings and the likes, though clean installing has its merits too.

Unfortunately, windows 10 is a major problem with some older software. Things that would install in xp, vista, 7 or 8 without problem don;t like windows 10.

windows 10 32 bit is more compatible with older apps than windows 10 64 bit as for the safety it has a lot of features removed. I.e.an older game or software that came on cd with cd copy protection will likely not install as the parts of windows that would do this aren't there. sometimes you can get away with copying the cd or dvd to the drive and installing or changing the compatabillity to winxp or lower, sometimes (before someone gets on the bandwagon you are legally allowed to make one backup copy of your digital media, i.e. cd dvd copy, working hard drive copy, digital copy etc) you can use cloning tools to copy your dvd or cd to an image while removing the copy protection (some copy protection is so incompatible it just deletes the install folder files when their done which is less than helpful).

However, even if you manage to install and get the files extracted they might not work for a number of reasons, windows DEP is a nightmare as it will just kill any program it doesn't like, if you can't get it running in any compatibility mode, you may want to go to DEP and add it to the DEP exceptions, run as administrator.

If you have originals, they may also have copy protection on the executables which windows will kill anyway (while i do not approve of game or software cracks), you may have to use a modified executable (if you own the original and using this to make a working copy this is legal)

the main problems i have found is actually getting the files installed or on tot he system. you could use a virtual machine, like oracle's virtual box (window 7 and 8 had their own virtual machine with windows xp but windows 10... oh noooooo), install windows xp / vista or 7, install your application, and literally either run it from within the virtual pc, or copy the game folders out of the virtual machine to your pc, export any registry entries (Assuming your are using like for like 32 or 64 bit os for both virtual pc and OS) and common files etc, run the game.

It was a Doogie Howser episode.

Nip/Tuck actually....

Turn Direct Play off or no, the opposite of what it is currently, reboot and try again.

edit:

After some Google searching, enabling "direct play" fixed my issue. (You enable it through your control panel in Windows...programs and features, "turn windows features on or off," and it's under "legacy components.") Google it or find a YouTube video like I did.

That post was 2 years ago Doctor. :P I can't remember what the hell I was doing two days ago.
AND I switch over to Win10 tomorrow so I'm in no mood to read this thread anyway.

Hi, I would recommend checking the X-Wing forum to see if maybe there's any help there, and if not contacting GOG Support to see if they can help (a response may take 24-48 hrs iirc).

But wasn't DEP introduced already in Windows XP SP2? So issues with DEP are not specific to Windows 10 (not sure if that was what you were suggesting...)

I recently had to disable DEP in Windows 7/64bit, I couldn't get Deus Ex (GOG version) work otherwise, even with the GMDX mod. After disabling DEP, it works fine (at least the GMDX modded version, earlier it would just crash on launch).

https://www.gog.com/forum/deus_ex_series/goty_not_running_on_windows_7/post33

For me the "DEP exceptions" never worked for some reason, the buttons to manage it were always greyed out or something. The only thing I got to work was to disable DEP completely (and then maybe enable it later if not playing such games anymore).
