Captain's log: Stardate 1988 or so.

I rented a Star Trek game from a local convenience store for 8-bit Nintendo NES and played it and solved it over the next day or two. I don't remember the full name of the game, but I was wondering if it might be the same game as the Star Trek 25th Anniversary Edition here on GOG which I own and haven't played yet?

The GOG game lists 1992 as the game's release date. I can't be sure about when I played the NES game, I think it was 1988 or so but it could have been as late as 1992 also as I know where I was when I played it but not the exact time frame and I moved elsewhere in late 1992 and beyond so it had to be before Oct 1992 for sure.

I literally do not remember a damn thing about the NES Star Trek game so unfortunately I can't give any information that might help determine if it is the same game or not, but if I played it again it might jog my memory if beer and life didn't kill those cells ages ago.

I'm going to google around to find out but I thought I would ask the lazyweb here first because someone here is more likely to know something and respond before I can figure this one out myself due to the time frame in question. :)

According to this list, there were only 2 Star Trek games for the NES, and since one is late 1993 release, it has to be the 25th Anniversary game.

It isn't the same game as the NES version of the 25th anniversary edition. They are both very different games. I remember playing both and both are very enjoyable in their own ways.

I think there was a deliberate effort to make them different. One has nothing to do with the other.

My gut says no. 25th is a traditional point and click adventure (with the CD version being fully voiced by the original cast IIRC) with was totally personal computer domain back then. I cannot imagine one of yestery... yestercenturies Nintendo/SEGA consoles with a point and click adventure.

I also played the 25th anniversary on the NES. The scenario is different. For instance at the start you have to solve a power problem which involves beaming down to a world and trying to go into the temple. I never got past getting to the temple. My gut also says older as it is no way like the GOG release
Sweet, thanks for all of the quick feedback everyone. It seems that from the various links you've provided and info that the NES game was indeed of the same name but it appears to be a completely different game. Now that I think about it more I think I do recall that it was the same name which might have been what made me subconsciously think about the old NES game. Reading up on those links and wikipedia links for both games it seems they were fairly different and that there was also a Gameboy game with the same name that was different too:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek:_25th_Anniversary_(NES_video_game)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek:_25th_Anniversary_(computer_game)

I never saw the NES Star Trek Next Generation game so it had to be that one. All I remember about the NES game was some impossibly difficult puzzle at the end that I think you were in a jail cell with laser force fields or something and had to solve some difficult puzzle to get out and it got really annoying. :) Funny I can't remember the rest of the game that was the fun part LOL.

Going to start the PC game up in a few minutes and have a look. It seems to have gotten rave reviews in the 90s and the modern reviews both on GOG and elsewhere seem to be very high also so hopefully it is fun. :)

Thanks again!
OOooh... here's a lil brain teaser for you guys.... Right now the NES version of the game is exactly 24 years old to date, and the PC one is 23 years old. Let's say as a hypothetical situation, they want to honour both the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, and the 25th anniversary of this game by taking the original game and remastering it as a modern HD version along the lines of a number of 90s games that have gotten redone lately like Day of the Tentacle, Grim Fandango et al.

What would/should they call it?

Should they call it:

1) Star Trek 50th Anniversary Edition
2) Star Trek 25th Anniversary Edition 25th Anniversary Edition
3) Star Trek 25th Anniversary Edition Redux HD
4) Suggest your own idea

:oP

I think they should call it #2 - Star Trek 25th Anniversary Edition 25th Anniversary Edition, because it is funny and would make people ask questions and wonder about the kind of weird name and draw attention to it. Also, when the 50th anniversary of Star Trek is upon us, most likely the IP owner will hook up with some big game studio to do a brand new game and call it Star Trek 50th Anniversary so they might not want to use the name for an old nostalgic game.

Just a goofy idea that came to me. :)

Oh crap, just after I submitted that I though of something funnier on top of that. In another 25 years if they did my suggestion, they could release 3 new games to mark the 75th anniversary:

1) Star Trek 75th Anniversary Edition - a new game that beams right into your head like a holodeck or something
2) Star Trek 50th Anniversary Edition 25th Anniversary Edition (the 25th anniversary edition of the 50th anniversary game that will come out in another 2 years)
3) Star Trek 25th Anniversary Edition 50th Anniversary Edition (the original game of this thread redone a second time 50 years later on it's 50th anniversary)

LOL

Yeah, I have way too much time on my hands...

I think "Suggest your own idea" might a little bit far fetched, but I'd accept it.

LOL, when I wrote that there I looked at it a few times and thought "That really should have angle bracket tags around it" but neglected to follow through. ;oP

I probably would've made the same joke even then though, including the angle brackets.

To be fair though, I have no idea, and I honestly don't much care. Though I've enjoyed most of what I've watched of the shows and movies, I'm not super geeked out about new entries to the franchise.
