The Star Control: Origins Close Beta is now available to anyone who pre-orders the game (or the Star Control: Bundle) and wants to participate.

Called Fleet Battles, this first beta version is about getting your ships together and launching them either against your A.I. opponents or your friends. If you're not entirely happy with what's on offer, why not craft your own or use one the designs uploaded by other players?

Stay tuned for the upcoming Beta versions, called World Maker and Creator of the Universe.

wizisi2k: Just a heads up, as someone who owns this on Steam, there is workshop content. I would not take a bet high-profile mods/ships do NOT show up on a nod website. I believe this may actually be big risk with this properity. Also, would YOU pay $5.99 to have a full, official shipset from, oh say Star Trek (ONE series. All of them could very well be $20 or more) or Babylon 5? Those are two universes I could see DLC from. I could also see DLC from other shows like maybe Farscape or Firefly.
Doesn't that assume that Stardock has or will get licensing from the content-owners of those properties?

Since I have learned not to "do" Stardock (until "later" releases); perhaps it's known knowledge that those "rights" are (or, will be) in place - but I thought I'd just check...

Because otherwise, it's an assumption only, and I wouldn't plop down the cash on just that alone..

Apparently Brad Wardell of Stardock begged the original Star Control creators for those rights, but after years of being refused, Wardell just plainly stated that he owned those rights already.

Then he sued the living fuck out of the original creators (for announcing their own successor to the Star Control series), with estimates for legal costs going as high as two million dollar on the defendants' side. All of course to settle before going to court. Wardell pitched a creepy settlement offer that would have cost the original creators over 200,000$ and have them literally wiped out of the gaming history books.

So, yeah, toss a few bucks into the legal defense fund of Fred Ford and Paul Reiche, please.

And also never look at a Stardock game ever again. But judging from this thread, I guess you folks were doing that anyway. ;)
