Get a free slice of magic - no force required!

SpellForce 3, the epic continuation of the RTS/RPG series, is just around the corner and you can already pre-order it, DRM-free on GOG.com. But before you make up your mind, why not have a free bite on the house to see how it tastes?

Go ahead and join us for a Free Preview Weekend by getting your free slice of the game right here. It contains 4 skirmish maps, 1 singleplayer mission and the fully-functional multiplayer mode of SpellForce 3.

The Free Preview Weekend will last until November 27, 11PM UTC.
After that time, the Free Preview version will get automatically removed from your library.

Frozen: Just to be sure:
I don't need Galaxy to play this preview, right?
There are offline installers available.

Leroux: I don't quite understand what this is. It's got an offline installer and supposedly contains only a small part of the actual game, which makes it sound like a demo, but then again, you can only try it on this weekend and it it will be removed from the library again? Does it feature DRM? Is Galaxy needed for playing it? What would happen if someone used the offline installers after the 27th? If it still works then, what's the point of removing it from the library? If it doesn't, what measures are in place to prevent us from playing it? Why limited content AND limited time?

If I'm not mistaken, this is a first for GOG and entering a territory that it usually occupied by DRM clients like Steam and Origin, so I think it's needs more precise explanations.
Okay! The technicalities are a bit more important here than we thought. So I'll try and cover the bases, I think this should cover most of the questions. Thanks for being patient, it is Friday night over here after all.

• Yes, the build works offline. And yes, the build features offline content

• It works like every other product on GOG, so we can't revoke your access to the files

• There is logic behind Library removal:
We're doing a limited-time event for a pre-release version of the game. Which, unlike your typical demo, means it's intended to work during the event, but not be supported or updated down the line.

In more practical terms: chances are the folks at THQNordic aren't going to keep MP servers online once the event is over, and even if they do, the build will quickly give way to the full release. If a Windows update breaks something, it's not getting updated – effectively abandoned, dead and broken...

• ...but if you really want to keep playing the offline content, you still can! Just hang on to the installer.

• And yup, it's our take on the "Free Weekend" thing other platforms do sometimes.

On a personal note – at the end of the day, this is a pretty neat event that lets us preview/demo an upcoming game before release. I honestly think it's super cool of THQNordic to have worked with us on making this possible, DRM-free, for our community in the first place. Normally the way this goes is "nah, if they want the free weekend they can just go to Steam".

If you feel strongly about the way this Preview Weekend has been implemented, let us know why and how you think we could handle this better next time. That always helps, and we'll be keeping up.

Breja: That's not logic I like. I mean, in this case it's not important to me, being a free demo and all, but in general the reasoning "it's no longer updated so it might just as well be entirely removed" is just wrong in my opinion. I'd be outraged if it were to be applied to something paid for. Even if it's not being updated there may still be ways to run it, and if there aren't now, they may be in the future.
Sure – I think the thing to keep in mind is that this is a free preview build of a game that's not out yet. In this case we felt it's a cleaner, simpler solution to remove the one-off product.

That doesn't mean the logic will now apply to retail games.

Breja: Still, thank you for answeing the questions, and yes I'm glad that we get a DRM-free version of such a preview usually restricted to DRM services.
Same here, thanks THQNordic ;)

Spectre: The demo looks like it's been removed from the library early as there's still a banner for it on the sale page, but the link and the link in this thread go to the general games storefront, and it says the 27th 11pm UTC.
Hiccup on our end - should be back up shortly! :)

It was not our intention, nor THQ Nordic’s, to „introduce DRM” to GOG with this free preview of Spellforce 3. Due to a miscommunication it did happen. As the developers of the game are working hard on finishing the game for its release next week, we won’t be able to do anything with the free preview weekend installers to make them work for you.

With this preview event, GOG and THQ Nordic, we both wanted to try something new and fresh to bring exciting stuff to the players and the platform. I don’t know if some of you can relate, but sometimes it is difficult to experiment and try out new stuff whilst keeping everything else in check, this happened in this case. This means that we will change the modalities of future preview events, where we (GOG and THQ Nordic) promise to double and triple-check, that the builds will be working as intended, even after such timed events are over.

It was a learning for both of us, and we listened. Upcoming preview events will be better and different. At the same time we’d like to thank all of you who participated in the free preview event, and giving us feedback regarding not only the game itself, but also for potential upcoming preview events in cooperation with THQ Nordic or other partners.
