sunshinecorp: So what's great is the false sense of freedom? The misconception that being able to say whatever you want is somehow enough?
Thanks for confirming that you completely missed what I was saying. I'll try to explain it...
The problem isn't democracy, but people's heads. I know a shitload of people running around with iPhones, 100 mbit internet access, flat screen TVs, cars (about 10 years old, but hey) and fully furnished and equipped appartements. Those people don't starve and have a health insurance. They go on vacation every two years and have enough money left to go out on the weekends. But as soon as something breaks (fridge, waching machine, whatever), they start to complain about how fucked up the country is and how the rich become richer and that the poor working class can't afford anything, not realizing how fucking rich they really are (they're just wasting their money on crap they don't really need). And if we really hate our country, we're free to move to any other country of our choice.
Have a look at non-democratic countries. Most people there don't even have the chance to make enough money to live such a live. They can't easily move to another country. And if they start to complain, they'll get thrown into jail (or worse, if they're well known regime critics).
sunshinecorp: The world is going down the drain but hey, at least you're free to bitch about it!
The world's going down the drain? Why? Because people use their smartphones to post on Facebook how poor they are? Wake up, goddamit. We have houses, food, health insurances and all kinds of other crap that is LUXURY in most parts of the world. In lots of democratic countries you don't even have to work to get these things, because they're considered to be basics that every citizen deserves! And if our politicians are corrupt pieces of shit, we're even allowed to elect Syriza or Podemos. Try doing this in a non-democratic country...
No, the (democratic!) world isn't going down the drain. Some countries realized that taking loans, or building hundreds of thousands of houses to sell them as capital investment isn't a viable model to run your country. But thanks to being democratic countries, we're getting loans from other democratic countries, allowing us to survive until we've rebuilt our economy to something that works. Turning into a dictatorship, wouldn't solve our problems. It would just mean that the same corrupt politicians could become even more corrupt, because they're not longer part of some union anymore.
What's going down the drain are oppressive regimes. That's why we have so many refugees in Europe. Some democratic countries see why it is the right thing to help those refugees, other democratic countries are free to say "
Fuck you, we don't want them". But it's fucked up people again who say "
Shoot them all, we hate Islam!!!!" in all their "Our democracy isn't a democracy"-glory.
ps. Sorry for raging. I just can't stand people (mainly Europeans) who can't see what great lives they're allowed to live. We don't have war, we have food, we're discussing all kinds of nonsense on the internet (while sitting in our warm homes!), we're free to chose where and what we work... Heck, just show a small piece of gratitude! It's a fucking privilege to be an European. I'm a German living and working self employed in Spain. I just threw some clothes in a bag, came here, registered at the town hall, rented a flat and started to work. If I'll ever fail in my job and can't earn my living, I can just go back to Germany, get a flat and health insurance for free and about 400 Euro a month to buy food and stuff. I'll get this because... well... because that's what you get when you don't have anything oO Seriously? How awesome is that?! I must be the luckiest person on this whole, damn planet! And that's an achievement of democracy, diplomacy and governments that try to make good decisions. Show me a non-democratic country where you have such a great live!
