I would say Dragon Age Origins is definitely worth playing. It has rough edges but I had fun with it.

Didn't read all the posts, so maybe this is covered. My opinion is that it is a very good game. Its isometric, chase after the bad guy fantasy, much like BG, IWD etc. Its selling point was each race had their own sort of unique intro to the game. I have played through with a party - something I generally don't like doing, and found it was ok, the characters were a bit annoying, but didn't go out of their way to get themselves killed. And I have played through solo with two rogues and one arcane warrior. That is far more fun, stun an ogre, run round the back and stab that bastard mutliple times :o) (Should really have called him Michael Gove - although you are US so probably wont get that).
Story keeps plodding along well, although there isn't as much of it and it definately doesn't hit the granduer of Baldurs Gate or the weirdness/depth of Planescape. There is plenty of felxibility in the engine to try different things, though not much really between the characters - Elves magic or bow, humans all things, dwarves fighters or thieves etc.
To my mind, £5.99 is a steal for this game, was very surprised to see it at this price, including all the expansions/DLC. So I brought it immediately even though I own each part on disc.

Btw, are there any good community adventures for Dragon Age Origins? If I'm not mistaken, it came with a campaign editor like NWN and NWN2, right?

i finish DA:O but only with rogue. i tried mage too but i was playing at maximum difficulty and even in the starting battles you get to deal with traps and if you don't have rogue in party you don't even see them. makes your whole party get knockdown, damage, lasting burns... :-/ but otherwise it was fun game - i liek when i kill that child possessed by demon (^_^) his mother tries to stop me but i slap her in the face and send her back to sleep hihi :P i also enjoyed killing the blood mage - if you make mage class you meet him early and find out more about him. he tries to romance a girl but he's out of his league and needs to be taught a lesson :-]

At least Dragon Age: Origins wasn't afraid to give you more than 3 dialogue options.

Not really. The thing was in development for so long, every it did, Mass Effect had already done better.

Wow, a big thank you to everyone for the input. A lot of this is positive and it sounds like there are a few more game features I didn't know about or even consider in my line of questioning. I'm now leaning heavily towards giving this game a try. I've been hitting my backlog pretty hard this year and have been in the mood for a nice long RPG, although I already had quite a few to choose from so adding one more just makes that decision a bit harder. But having too many choices is never something to complain about!
